Chapter 179-2

Chapter 179-2

As if my body had a mind of its own, which I was beginning to believe that it did, it naturally leaned into his embrace, welcoming it. Of course, I’m not going to deny that I felt a pull towards him, and that it felt right being in his arms right now, but how I got here had me questioning how powerful this mate bond was, especially now that he had marked me.

Slowly, I could feel his pain dwindling away as he held me tightly to his chest, almost as if he was realizing that he had nothing to worry about. Truth be told, even though Jacob’s offer was enticing, I knew that California was no longer where I belonged.

Chance tried to explain this to me during our first deep conversation, but unfortunately back then I didn’t really comprehend what he was trying to tell me. My parentsdeaths were far too fresh in my mind then, and I was desperately holding on to the last dream that my parents had for me, but now I see what he was trying to say to me.

Now knowing what I know, truth be told, I never really belonged in California. My mother had fled there, and used it as her refuge, and that was exactly what I would be doing if I returned. She had fled her true home and everyone that ever loved her, for exactly what?

I mean, she did meet my father out there, and she seemed happy, but I had to wonder if she truly was. Honestly, if it was me, I would have been looking over my shoulder all those years, worried that my past would eventually find not just me, but my family I had built too. Plus, I honestly don’t think I could just pick up and leave like she did, now that I have formed bonds and relationships with those in Beaumont.

All these thoughts had me now even more curious about why my mother had left, but I was quick to realize that my thoughts were no longer personally my own when I heard Cash in my head saying to me, I promise to keep you safe until my last breath.

My hand inadvertently slid up his chest, wanting to cup his face with the palm of my hand, but stopped midway when I noticed a discoloration on his flesh. My eyebrows furrowed as I stared at the spot, while the tips of my fingers continued to glide across his perfectly smooth flesh towards the slightly raised area. Gingerly, I began to trace the outline of it, as something began to slowly stir inside of me, making me realize that Cash wasn’t the only one that had left their mark last night.

As the tips of my fingers finished tracing the outline of the spot that looked like a crescent moon, a low growl rumbled from Cash’s chest, vibrating against my own, making me look up to see that his eyes were now closed as he took in a deep long breath. It didn’t take long for me to realize that the growl was one of pleasure and that my touch upon his mark was what was causing it.

My fingers lingered for a moment over the area, before I began to feel another emotion projecting from him, one that made my cheeks instantly blush, and my hand retract immediately from his flesh. Pulling from his embrace, I take a step back, while a chuckle now comes from his lips.

Seriously, I wanted to slap him across the chest, but refrained myself from doing so, because that chuckle that was echoing throughout the kitchen was a clear sign that I had deescalated the situation just like I had sought out to do.

I must not have been the only one that had realized this, because with a nervous but steady voice, I hear Jacob from behind me ask him, Does this mean you’re not going to kill me?

Cash lets out another chuckle, this one even more projected than the last one, as he shakes his head at Jacob, before he says, Dude, seriously? You really thought I was going to kill you?

WellYeah. Your growl is pretty mean.Jacob said back to him, before leaving out his own chuckle that had a clear line of nervousness underlining it.

Cash begins to razz Jacob while he nudges past me, giving me a wink to let me know all is okay. I let out a long exhale elated that nothing had come from the misunderstanding, as I turned just in time to see Cash taking Jacob under his armpit in a playful headlock, before giving him a noogie.

A smile crept onto my face, seeing the two of them like this, as it symbolized to me that my past

life and my present could coexist. It put me at ease knowing that I didn’t have to give up everything to be a part of this new world I belonged to, but as I stood there with my heart filling with joy for the first time in a long time, the sound of a chair scooting abruptly against the floor drew my attention away from Cash and Jacob to Mazie standing from her seat.

Weirdly, I seemed to be the only one that was paying attention to her departure from the room, and as I watched her leaving the kitchen emotionlessly, there was no doubt in my mind now that something was going on with her. But the question was what it could possibly be. I knew that her and Cash had had their disagreements, but my gut was telling me this was something else, because, in all honesty, it was so unlike Mazie and her character to act just like she had.

With everything that had been going on, it was hard to tell what it could be, but I wasn’t going to sweep what happened under the rug. Something was bothering her, and I was determined as her friend to find out what is causing her to act this way, because whatever it is, we need to address it before it becomes something more.

I was just about to follow her out of the kitchen when I felt Cash’s arm wrap around me. pulling me into an embrace along with Jacob. Not wanting to ruin the moment as the two

were smiling away, I watched Mazie disappear down the hallway, thinking I would address it

later.
