Chapter 180-2
When I finally came about, my eyes slowly opened to find that I was no longer in the truck, but instead, comfortably lying in a bed, surrounded by a familiar scent that was putting me further at ease. Somehow, I had slept the greater half of the trip home, and if I was being honest, I was glad that I had, because my body, for the first time in days, felt rested.
Extending my arms high above my head, I stretched my body out, as I let out a slight yawn, slowly awakening myself, while the moonlight seeped into the room through a slightly cracked window. It wasn’t until I followed that direct line of light that I noticed that I wasn’t the only one in the room. Hidden within the darkness, Chance sat in silence in the corner of his bedroom, just staring at me, while I slowly moved to sit up.
My heart instantly began to race at the sight of him, and I honestly don’t know why I was nervous seeing him, knowing that I hadn’t done anything wrong according to this mate bond that we shared. But I was extremely nervous, and when I looked away from him and asked, How long have I been asleep?” my voice had a slight uncertainty about it, from not knowing how he was going to react to what transpired between Cash and I last night.
As I stared at completely nothing, counting the seconds passing by without his response, I began to worry that all this talk about sharing a mate was just that. But then, Chance finally clears his throat and says, “You’ve been back for a few hours now, and although it killed me to let you sleep, I didn’t have the heart to wake you, especially after Cash told me everything that you have been through.”
My head snapped back to look at Chance, with his nonchalant mention of Cash’s name, as I noticed there was no hostility in his tone when Cash’s name rolled from his tongue, leading me to believe that there were no hard feelings between the three of us. But it was clear that he was upset by everything else that had happened, as he moved to finally stand before making his way to my side.
With his hands balled into fists, I stared up at him, as he paused beside the bed, staring down at me with the darkness of the room shadowing his face. “I should have done more to find you. I shouldn’t have trusted that witch.” He now says to me, before he looks away from me, but not before the moonlight lit his face enough for me to see the torments of what ifs now plaguing his eyes.
I now understood what was going on in that head of his, and I knew that he was trying to hold himself accountable for what had happened to me, but none of this was his fault. Lexi had been introduced to him as my friend, and if anyone was responsible for what had happened, it was me, because I was the one that had allowed her into our lives.
Knowing that I needed to reassure him that this wasn’t his doing, I reached for his hand.

gently cupping his fist, before saying to him, “None of this is your fault. If there is anyone to blame, it is me, because I am the one that was fooled by her in the first place.”
Immediately, Chance began to shake his head, before he responded back to me with, “No, 1 am the oldest of my brothers, and I made a decision that almost cost us our mate’s life. If anything had happened to you, it would have been on me.”
I don’t know why, but at that moment I just wanted to slap him and bring him back from the gilt he was obviously bearing, but I knew that whatever I said or did wasn’t going to change his mind. One thing I knew about Chance was that he was as stubborn as a mule, and it was clear that he hated himself right now because Lexi had duped us both. There was clearly nothing I could do or say to him that would take away the guilt he was carrying with him, so instead, I decided to take another approach.
