Chapter 182-2
This all had me believing that this was why someone out there was paying the big bucks to have a witch for hire watching over Raven. I should have known that Lexi had been withholding information from me, only telling me what she thought I needed to know.
Once again, I realized that I was foolish for having any trust in that witch, but I kept reminding myself that at the time I truly thought she had Raven’s wellbeing in her best interest. But unfortunately, I am now seeing that Lexi was just following the orders given to her from whomever was paying her. It was clearer than ever now that my brothers and I were just a bump in whatever road this benefactor had been steering Raven on.
This whole thing enraged me, and I couldn’t hold back a low growl that rumbled in my chest just thinking about someone else having all the cards in their hands when it came to my mate. As my one hand gripped the steering wheel tight, I began to see red, while I tried to hold back my wolf from wanting to take over. There was no doubt that he was blaming me for failing our mate, and hell, I couldn’t blame him, as I felt like I had too.
As I fought my internal battles with myself and my wolf, which I knew I was about to lose at any second, I felt Raven place her delicate hand over my own that rested on her thigh. Instantly I closed my eyes for a split second, while I took a deep breath, trying to calm both myself and my wolf. The mere touch of Raven’s flesh upon my own drew me back to the present, making me realize that I couldn’t change the past, and that I needed to focus on the now, which was keeping Raven safe.
At that moment, Raven gave my hand a slight squeeze, taking a play from my own playbook, and I knew exactly what she was doing. I was the one that was supposed to be her rock, comforting her in this grave time, but she was the one being my savior, bringing me back from my own despair.
Knowing I needed to pull my shit together for her and the pack, I took one last deep breath and opened my eyes. But as my eyes fully opened and focused on the road in front of us, I quickly retracted my hand from Raven’s thigh, placing both hands on the steering wheel, while my foot hit the brake so hard that I thought it was going to go through the floorboards
As the brakes on the truck instantly froze up, I lost complete control. Before I knew what was happening, the sound of Raven’s screams mixed with the sound of wreckage filled my ears. I tried my hardest to reach for Raven, wanting to protect her, but it was a total loss with the truck rolling recklessly down the highway.
It honestly felt like there was no end in sight, as the truck continued to flip over for what felt like the hundredth time. At some point, Raven’s screams dissipated, leaving only the sound of metal crushing and glass shattering to fill the air.

Desperately, I tried once again to reach for her, just wanting to feel the warmth of her hand in mine to know she was okay, but that didn’t happen. Instead, the palm of my hand ended up getting speared by a piece of shattered glass, causing me to wince in pain, as it pierced its way through my hand.
Just when I thought this nightmare was never going to end, everything finally came to a halt. Immediately, I called out Raven’s name, while I tried reaching for the seatbelt’s latch to unbuckle myself.
The weight of my body hanging upside down was causing resistance, making it harder for it to release, but thankfully it finally gave way. My body fell to the roof beneath me with a loud thud, as shards of glass tried to pierce their way through my flesh, but I couldn’t feel a thing at this point, because all I could think about was Raven.
Through the smoke and dust from the debris I could barely see a thing, and the only light that shined inside the cab of the truck was a dim red light from the dashboard. The crushed quarters were tight for my huge frame, as I tried my best to turn towards Raven, before my hands followed the seat in her direction.
The tips of my fingers glided across the surface of the fabric of the truck’s seat until they finally reached Raven’s body. Once again, I called out Raven’s name, as I nudged my way closer to her, trying to reach across her body to unlatch her seatbelt, but it was clear by the way she was hanging from the seat and her lack of response that she was out cold from the accident. Thankfully, I could still hear the sound of her heart beating, telling me that she was
alive.
My fingers frantically fumbled with the latch of her seatbelt, as I began to whisper to her that she was going to be okay. Honestly, I don’t know if these words were for her or for me, but saying them to her made me feel better about the situation.
With my one arm wrapped around Raven trying to unbuckle her and my other arm trying to hold her petite, motionless body in place, I finally heard the click I was waiting for, as the weight of her body fell into my arms. But as I felt the warmth of her body against my chest. something grabbed ahold of my legs, making me release her, before I was being forcefully drugged from within the crushed cab of my truck.
It was at this moment that I realized that the tree across the road that had caused me to brake so hard was placed there as a trap, as the potent smell of rotten eggs filled the surrounding air.
