Crowning me as the new Alpha of my pack wasn’t even remotely an option, nor did I even want the title. Don’t get me wrong, there were definitely days that I wanted to overturn my father’s and my brothers‘ authority, especially when it came to their spoken disapproval of my behavior, but truth be told, I didn’t want the responsibility.

Unfortunately, right now, I couldn’t let this rogue Alpha know this, because I was sure he would see it as a sign of weakness, and I had to make him think that I was doing this all for my own personal gain.

So instead, I said to him, “I look forward to finalizing our transaction.” As I did my best to hold back any taletelling signs of my dislike of this whole situation.

“As do I.” He said coldly back to me, staring me up and down before finally nodding his head, making me wonder if I wasn’t fooling anyone but myself here. But then he turned on his heels and began to walk away before saying over his shoulder to me, “I will return by tomorrow night’s end to collect.”

My eyes remained fixated on the rogue Alpha’s back, while I remained standing there making sure that he was truly leaving before I dared to leave my post outside this door. As I watched him disappear into the shadows of the house, I began to wonder why I put my trust in him.

The whole alliance between us was unheard of and no honorable Alpha would ever have entertained an alliance with a rogue, not alone an Alpha rogue, but here I was in complete cahoots with one. There was no doubt in my mind that when my family found out what I had done, they would disown me. But of course, I was used to that, hence why I believed that I was the only one capable of making this decision to save everyone.

Just as the rogue Alpha disappeared completely from my sight, the door behind me cracked open, before I heard a female voice say, “Alpha, a word.”

Slowly I turned around to see the door ajar, but the female doctor that had called out to me had already retreated into the room. I hesitated for a moment to join her, as I turned back to look in the direction that the rogue Alpha had just disappeared in, before I decided that he was long gone.

Lowering my head, I walked into the room, trying to keep my gaze on the old hardwood floors beneath my feet, not daring to look around the room, because I was too far invested to back

out.

“Alpha, the patient’s wounds are healing, but not as quickly as they should. If their mate was here…” The female doctor began to say, but I quickly looked up from the floor straight at her.

holding a finger up in front of her to stop her, because I knew exactly what she was about to

say to me.

A low growl rumbled from my chest, because it was clear that my wolf wasn’t happy with me, especially with what I was about to ask. “But the wounds will eventually heal on their own,

correct?”

Dumbfounded that I asked such a question, the female doctor looked back at me, not believing what her ears had just heard from my lips, before she finally began to nod her head as she says to me, “Yes, the wounds will heal, but the patient looks to have been through a lot lately. It may take some time as these wounds run deeper than just superficial, hence why I believe the mate is needed.”

Another growl began to rumble from deep within my chest, but this time I held it back by closing my eyes and looking back down at the floor. Taking in a long, slow inhale, I did my best to calm my wolf, all while I tried to reason with myself with what the doctor was saying needed to be done. But unfortunately, I quickly realized that wasn’t going to be so easily done, because I didn’t think that I could personally handle the task at hand.
