Moon Phased: The Triple Claim novel Chapter 401

Raven’s POV

Please forgive me.” My grandfather said as he moved to stand, before he reached his hand out towards me, but instead of accepting his apology and hand, I took a step back from him.

My rejection must have sparked something inside of him, because his eyes began to flicker between the glowing red back to our family familiar, as he looked like he was trying to fight the darkness.

Closing his eyes, he turned his back to me, while he yelled out, Everyone out! Before I watched him stumble forward, reaching for the arm of his throne to steady himself.

Even though the darkness inside of him scared me, I somehow found myself taking a step forward, wanting to help him. But before I could even fully raise my hand, Lexi, to my surprise, pushed past me, taking hold of my grandfather’s other hand, giving him the stability he needed to sit back down.

Chase, at the same time, quickly moved to my side, wrapping a protective arm around me, while I stood there watching Lexi caring for my grandfather, like nothing negative had just transpired between the two of them.

The Lexi that I had known all these years, verses the Lexi that was standing here today, was by no means one and the same. This Lexi was kneeling beside a King, tending to him like she was his own personal physician.

Are you okay?Chase whispered into my ear, as he drew me into his chest, while I continued to watch Lexi handing my grandfather a vial of purple substance.

Without hesitation, my grandfather downed whatever was in the vial in one quick gulp, before I watched him lean his head back against his throne, while he closed his eyes, taking long and steady breaths. But what had captured my full attention wasn’t that he looked to be in pain, but that he was holding Lexi’s hand to his chest, as if she meant something to him.

Chase and I just silently stood there staring at the sight before our eyes, where I was sure he was concerned about my grandfather’s wellbeing, especially since Jacob had told me that they had been working on an alliance to run the rogues out of Beaumont for good. But as for me, it wasn’t that I wasn’t concerned about my grandfather’s health, but my curiosity was once again getting the best of me. There was clearly some kind of connection between Lexi and my grandfather, and I couldn’t help wondering what it was.

Slowly, Lexi stood, and as she did, she released my grandfather’s hand, laying it gently on his chest, while I noticed that his breathing looked less labored. As if she could feel my eyes on

her, she turned to face me, narrowing her eyes, before she stormed in my direction like she was ready to throw hands. But before she could get within a few feet, Chase shields me by placing himself between us, while he leaves out a low growl, warning her to back off

Honestly, I had no clue why she would even be mad at me, especially since I threw myself in front of her, shielding her from whatever my grandfather was planning on doing to her.

GurrLexi growled back at Chase, before she began to demand that he step aside, allowing the two of us to hash it out, but Chase was reluctant to do so until she calmed down.

That’s when Jacob decided to become the peacekeeper, stepping between us all, extending his hands in both our directions, as he says, Everyone just needs to chill out. You guys don’t need to be fighting in front of a dying man.

Dying man?I questioned, as my head snapped to look back at my grandfather resting peacefully on his throne, wondering how I was stupid enough not to see that he wasn’t well.

DuhWhy do you think they are hunting you? It’s just a matter of time before he takes his final breath. If you had just talked to me the first night you arrived here, I would have explained all of this to you. But no, you and Prince Charming here had to try and escape.Lexi angrily blurts out, clearly upset with not just me but with Chase too, but none of that matters right now, because she had just dropped a huge bomb on me.

Not only was my grandfather dying, but there was obviously a reason why they doubled down on their attempts to kill me. Honestly, I had no clue why they wanted me dead, other than the fact that I was of his blood, but did that really matter?

I mean, let’s face it, I didn’t even know that their world even existed until a few months ago, leaving me to wonder if these rogue Alphas really thought that little old me was that much of a threat to their damn pitiful existence. I had already compromised on my dreams, choosing to stay in Beaumont with the Ryder brothers, but I wasn’t fully willing to give up everything to be a freaking dark princess.

I didn’t sign up for this!I said frustratingly, as I raised my hands in the air, before I turned on my heels and headed towards the front door, not knowing what the hell I was even going to do once I got outside, because I still had no clue where here was. But I needed some fresh air, and I needed my space to think, because this was all too much for me to digest all at

once.

Thankfully, no one tried to stop me, leaving me not feeling like a prisoner for the first time since I had arrived here, but as I stepped outside, my mouth dropped in awe seeing the grounds in front of me. Never had I ever seen anything quite this spectacular in my life. But it wasn’t the grounds that had me in awe as much as it was all the men, women, and children that were roaming freely around like it was time square.

As I stood watching everyone go about their day, Lexi stepped out the front door behind me, and for a second, I thought that she was going to force me back inside, but instead she moved to my side and said calmly to me, I didn’t sign up for this either, but, as you can see, all of these people our counting on us to keep them safe.

I didn’t turn my head to look at her, but instead, I continued watching my grandfather’s people go safely about their day, while I digested what Lexi just said to me. It now all made sense to me why my grandfather brought me here, and why I had to make sure that these ruthless rogue Alphas that are hunting me never see the throne my grandfather sits on.
