Chapter 199

Raven’s POV

Taking a seat next to Chase, I sat down across the table from Lexi and Jacob, ready now to hash things out, especially with her. But before we got down to the nitty–gritty, I wanted to know exactly who I was talking to.

Clasping my hands together in front of me, I soberly stared straight across the table at Lexi, giving her my best business look, before I got to the point and straight out said to her, “I think it’s time that you come clean about who you really are.”

The one corner of Lexi’s lips curled up, as she stared me straight in the eyes, while trying to hold back her famous smirk. Her rebellious ways were all fine and dandy when lives weren’t at stake, but right now, we needed to act like two grown adults, because I now knew there were so many lives in our hands.

“Fine. You want to know who I really am? I am the person that has kept your ass alive all these years.” She said nonchalantly, like she had just revealed something new, but I had already figured that much out.

It didn’t take a rocket scientist to piece together that my grandfather had been the one that had sent her to watch over me, and for the past couple of years she had portrayed herself as my friend so that she could get close to me. But I realized after seeing her and my grandfather together, there was a reason why he had entrusted my life to her.

Realizing that she wasn’t just going to willingly come forth with the information that I sought, I decided to cut right to the damn chase with her. “Lexi, let’s cut out everything I already know and let’s get right to what matters the most right now. What is your relationship to my grandfather?”

Lexi’s eyes immediately widened like a deer in headlights, before she quickly said, as if she was trying to hide something from me, “I don’t know what you are talking about. I’m just an employee of his.”

Unlatching my fingers, I drew my arms towards me, crossing them over my chest, as I leaned back in my chair, while I now say to her, “Employees don’t care for their employers like I just witnessed you did.”

1 paused for a moment, watching the look of denial spread across her face, like she was trying to do her best to keep their relationship between them a secret, but if I was going to agree to all of this, I needed to know who I could trust. Right now, I still had all the faith in the world in Jacob, but that was because he didn’t have it in him to lie to me, but as for Lexi,

questioned where her loyalty lay.

Lexi remained silent, like she was pleading the fifth, but I wasn’t going to let this rest until 1 knew the truth. There was clearly more to all of this than she was allowing me to see, and now she had me wondering why she was trying so hard to hide it from me.

“Cat got your tongue for the first time in your damn life? Fine, then if you can’t be honest with me about this one small thing, then there is no way that the two of us can work together.” I said, taunting her, hoping that she would finally show me her hand in cards, before I moved to stand, playing my hand to the fullest.

Sure enough, before I could fully stand upright, Lexi folded by raising her hand, stopping me, as she finally broke her silence, by blurting out, “Your grandfather took me in when my parents were murdered by rogues.”

Lexi’s confession had me frozen in midstance, as I was taken aback by what she had just confessed, while I felt like a total piece of shit for pushing her like I had. Seeing tears begin to well in her eyes, I slowly lowered myself back into my seat, while I looked away from her, ashamed of myself for forcing her to remember such a horrific tragedy.

My eyes were now on Jacob, who looked to be in just as much of a state of shock as I was from Lexi’s confession. But unlike me, Jacob was still able to speak, and what he asked her was a question I too was now wondering.

“Then who was d**k and Karen?” He plain out asked her, just as confused as I was over the two individuals we had all called her parents over the last several years.

Honestly, after I had seen the pain I had just caused her, I wasn’t quite sure if now was the right time for this question, but my curiosity had me turning my head back to see what Lexi’s response was going to be.

As my eyes landed on her, I watched her wipe the tears away that were ready to seep from her eyes, before she let out a half chuckle before admitting. “They were just some rich family in your school district that had no children. Karen wanted a child so damn bad that I didn’t see any harm with my little spell I placed on her and d**k to make them believe that I was their daughter. Trust me, they benefited more from it than I did. If I had to take one more family photo dressed up like a damn princess, I was going to lose my shit. Raven here couldn’t have moved back to Beaumont at a better time, because I honestly didn’t know how much more of their lovey–dovey shit I could take.”

Jacob’s eyes instantly moved to mine, and I could tell that he was worried that Lexi’s words may have stirred my own tragic loss of pain back, but it hadn’t, because I had been too busy reading between the lines with what Lexi had just said. It was clear now why Lexi acted the way she did, as it was all a mechanism to hide the pain she had been feeling all these years

from not only the loss of her parents, but the fact that the closest thing she ever had to a parent was my grandfather. It was clear now why Lexi was so messed up, as she had clearly been raised by a man that had been battling demons his whole life.

There no longer was a need for her to furthermore explain their relationship to me, as I now knew that she was raised as the daughter he never knew. Now that I knew this, I couldn’t help but think that just maybe all this time, she didn’t protect me because my grandfather forced her too, but maybe, just maybe, because she felt a kinship towards me.
