Chapter 27-2
I barely heard Cash saying my name, as I leaned forward, still trying to regulate my breathing, while everything began to spin out of control. It wasn’t until I felt his hand on my flesh, did it all come to a complete halt, as I slowly turned to look at him, finally able to breathe.
“It’s okay Raven. I am here, and I have got you. You don’t have to be afraid. I promise I won’t let anything happen to you.” Cash promised me, as he stared deep into my eyes, almost as if he was hypnotizing me into believing everything was fine, while my heart finally slowed down, and my breathing became steady as if he somehow had a magical touch.
“We don’t have to go to school today if it’s too much for you too soon, but if you want to go, then I will be with you every step of the way. Well, not every step, because there’s no way in hell that I am going to repeat trigonometry with Mr. Brook. You’re on your own there.”
A chuckle slipped from my lips at Cash’s remark to Trigonometry class. It was clear what Cash was trying to do, and it was working, as I could feel my nerves begin to settle, all while my breathing and my heart returned to normal, without those damn exercises the shrink gave me to use.
Looking back at the building, his offer to skip school today sounded enticing, but I couldn’t take him up on it, because I would be giving that thing power over me. “No, I want to stay. I can’t allow my fears to dictate my life.”
A smile spread across Cash’s face, while he said to me, “I knew you were a fighter.” Before he got out of
the truck and moved to open my door.
As the two of us walked towards the school, Cash once again wrapped his arm around me, pulling me to
his side. I knew that he was just trying to be protective of me, but everyone’s eyes were now staring in our
direction, as whispers began to spread among our peers today.
I couldn’t even imagine what they must be thinking seeing me showing up to school once again with a different brother, and I began to worry that they might be getting the wrong impression about me. But right now, Cash’s arm around me was what was keeping me from having a panic attack, and I honestly didn’t
ľ care what they thought, as long as I made it through the day.
Opening the door for me, Cash motioned for me to enter, but as I went to step inside, I quickly stopped when I spotted two men carrying a metal door blocking my way. Stepping to the side, allowing them to make their way out of the school, my eyes fell upon the door that looked mangled. Barely recognizable, I saw the sign on the top of the door, reading, “Girl’s Locker Room.”
My hand moved to my mouth to cover it, wondering if that thing had done that to the door, as I thought that could have very well been my body last night, if Chance hadn’t rushed in to save me.
Cash began to rub my back at that moment, as if he could sense my heart beginning to race in my chest once again, while he whispered in my ear, “It’s going to be okay.”
But as my eyes remained fixated on the maintenance staff carrying the door to the dumpster, I had to

wonder if it truly was going to be okay, because if that thing could bend a metal door like that, then there was nowhere safe for me.
Throughout the rest of the school day, Cash or Mazie was always with me, never leaving my side, but that didn’t stop the paranoia was feeling that I was being watched. It made it hard for me to focus on my studies, as I kept looking out the windows, wondering if that thing was lurking outside waiting for me.
When I woke up this morning, I was determined to find out what it was, but as the day went on, I was beginning to rethink if I really wanted to.
