Sure enough, less than a minute later, she blurts out, “He’s not going to make it. His dying wish was for me to save you, since he claims you had saved him, allowing him to die in peace.”
Struggling, I pushed myself to a sitting position, on the cool leather couch, allowing myself to get a better view of my grandfather’s failing body. His arms laid folded in, as his hands were crossed over one another, resting with ease on his stomach. His facial features showed that he was in no pain, and even though his eyes were closed and his flesh looked pale, I could tell that he was truly at peace, as I had vanished the darkness from his aging body.
“I just wish you could have met him before he began to lose his battle.” Lexi then said, before she moved to his bedside, taking one of his hands into hers, while I watched a tear fall from her cheek, landing on the delicate fabric of the white sheer sheet that draped over his body,
For some reason at that moment, I began to believe that my grandfather had been a good man in his past, not because of the words she was speaking, but because of the pain she was now feeling knowing that his life was about to end. A part of me wished that I could have experienced the love of a grandfather like she had obviously done with him in my absence, but then, Lexi wouldn’t have this love that they shared to grieve. It was clear that their love meant the world to her, and I would never in a million years want to take that away from her, even though the two of us were at odds right now.
Gently, Lexi delicately placed my grandfather’s hand back over his other one, before she moved her hand to her face, wiping away her tears that dampened her cheeks. As she did this, she continued to say to me, “He loved your mother and you more than you will ever know. The life he could have had verses the life he had endured to keep you both safe..” She trailed off, not able to finish her sentence, as she began to get choked up, while she wiped more tears from her cheeks, away.
Sniffles now came from her, as I watched her trying to pull herself back together, but I knew the pain she was feeling right now all too well. Unfortunately, even though the man lying on the bed was my grandfather, I didn’t share the same magnitude of pain she was feeling from his inevitable loss.
A part of me was sad that I was losing someone that could have been a part of my life, but another part of me was shamelessly okay with the fact that I didn’t get to know him. The truth was, my heart couldn’t take much more loss, and by not having the chance to open my heart up to him, then I didn’t have to feel the pain again of losing someone that I loved and cared about.
“I just wish his love for me was as strong as it was for you, so that he would have fought harder to stay here with me. Without him, I have no home.” Lexi then confesses to me through her sobs, as her hand moves to the nightstand to bear her weight, while her legs begin to give out from beneath her.
Honestly, I have no clue how I did it, but somehow, I managed to get to my feet and race across the room, just in time to stop Lexi’s body from hitting the hard floor. With my arms under her armpits, holding her up the best that I could, Lexi’s tear-filled eyes looked straight into mine, before she completely left herself lose it now, in my arms.
My body stood there frozen, conflicted about whether I should comfort her, or just help her to the nearby chair. if this had been just weeks ago, I would have pulled her into my arms and told her how sorry I was for her loss, but after everything that had happened, I wasn’t sure where either of us stood with each other.
A part of me knew that her actions lately were from the amount of stress she had been under recently, and

if I was being honest, I hadn’t been the nicest to her either. But as I stand here contemplating on what to do, Lexi makes the choice for both of us, as she wraps her arms around me, pulling me tightly to her chest, while her tear-stained cheeks soak the shoulder of the oversized tee shirt that draped over my petite body.
I closed my eyes as my arms remained straightened under her armpits, as I stood there frozen, while Lexi sobbed in my arms. It wasn’t until she whispered, “I am so sorry Raven, please forgive me.” Did my arms finally collapse around her, pulling her into a true embrace.
Holding her tightly against my chest, I gently began to rub her back as a soft shushing sound came from my lips, trying to soothe her pain away. But unfortunately, my endeavors worked quite the opposite of what I had expected them to, causing the floodgates to let loose to Lexi’s tears and emotions, as she now says through her sobs, “I never pretended to be your friend. What we had was real.”
Tears instantly at that moment began to pool behind my closed eyes, knowing that in the vulnerable state she was in, she wouldn’t be lying to me. My heart then began to ache, not because I was feeling sadness right now, but because Lexi was being real.
