Chapter 40-1
Raven’s POV
“What the hell was that all about?” Mazie asked me, as we headed outside towards Chance’s
truck to wait for them.
Knowing that Mazie would find out eventually, I tilted my head to the side, as I removed my
hair that was covering Chase’s handprint to show her.
Mazie’s eyes widen as she looks at my neck, before she says, “No wonder Cash looked like he was ready to kill someone. Did Chase do this to you?”
Shaking my head, I let my hair fall back down over my neck, upset that once again I had caused an issue between the Ryder brothers, but even more worried that Chance had seen me holding Cash’s hand. Honestly, I don’t know why I did it, but I felt a draw to him at that
moment to stop him in his rage of anger towards his brother.
Unfortunately for me, I now found myself even more confused about my feelings that had been developing for Cash, as my hand felt so naturally intertwined with his. Before Chance appeared, I felt like Cash and I were sharing a moment with each other, as Cash stared deep into my eyes, as if he was trying to reach my soul.
As if Mazie could read my mind, she said to me, “Well it’s a good thing that you were able to
stop Cash, because I fear he would have killed Chase right in those hallways. I had never seen him before like that. You know he cares about you just as much as Chance does?”
And that was exactly the problem for me, as I couldn’t dismiss how caring and protective he was of me. Between what happened yesterday and today, he had been the one there for me, just like Chance had been there for me when I was attacked in the girls’ locker room.
I was just about ready to tell Mazie that I knew Cash cared about me, as the two of us walked around the side of Chance’s truck, but Mazie stopped me from saying anything when she brought her hand across my chest, bringing us both to a dead halt, while she stepped in front
of me.
As I looked past her, I couldn’t help the scream that left my lips, as I backed up, finding myself pinned against Chance’s truck, while Mazie stood between me and the largest-looking wolflike creature I had ever seen in my life. It wasn’t until the sun reflected off its eyes did I see the red glow in them, making me realize this was the monster that had attacked me in the girl’s locker room.
Mazie foolishly at that moment lifted her hand in front of her, as she said to the beast, “If I was you, I wouldn’t do this.” As if the beast could understand her, but the only thing she

earned by doing this was a low growl, and a snap of its canines, making me pull her back against the truck beside me, as I let out another scream for help.
Turning my head, hoping that someone would hear my screams, I saw Cash running in our direction, as I prayed to God that he knew a way to stop this beast. But just when I had finished saying my prayers, a low growl came in the direction of the football field, making me turn my head to see another wolflike beast sprinting in our direction.
At first, I thought we were as good as dead, and that the one running towards us was his companion, but I quickly realized that wasn’t the case, as the one that was standing in front of us took off running towards the forest that surrounded the parking lot.
As I watched the second beast run straight past us, disappearing into the forest chasing after the first beast, I let out a long breath that I was holding, as my hands began to shake, and my heart heavily beat in my chest.
Cash at that moment made his way to me, wrapping his arms around me, as he asked me, ” Are you okay?”
