Chapter 42-1

Chance’s POV

+25 Points

Cash was sitting on the front porch when Chase and I arrived at the ranch, and as we stepped out of his jeep, Cash moved to stand, making me worry that I may have to referee a fight between them. But as I moved towards the porch, I noticed the killer look in his eyes was gone, and in its place was a look I wasn’t used to seeing from him towards Chase.

Through our mind link, Cash asked Chase, “Did you get him?”

Chase let out a growl, but I knew it wasn’t geared towards Cash but towards himself for letting the rogue Alpha get away. One thing about Chase was that he hated to lose, and it was clear that he wasn’t taking it too well, that another Alpha had bested him.

“The son of a bitch disappeared into the cemetery, and I lost him.” Chase finally tells him, but as I move to step onto the porch, Chase is hesitant to follow.

“Where’s Raven?” I asked Cash, hoping that she had allowed him to bring her here, knowing that she would be a mess mentally after what happened.

“Our grandmother recruited her to help make jam as soon as we got here, and she kicked me out of the kitchen.” Cash said, rolling his eyes, clearly upset that he didn’t get to spend some time alone with her, but I was a bit confused how she was in any mental shape to be in the

kitchen with our grandmother helping her.

With the sound of the radio playing, I peered into the house through the screen door, down the hallway, to see Raven in the kitchen with our grandmother with a huge smile on her face, as if nothing had happened. Turning back to Cash with a confused look on my face, I asked him, “Why does she look unphased by what happened?”

Cash leaves out a huff before he says, “Turns out, she just thinks that it was a wild wolf that tried to attack her, and that they are native to our area.” He then turns to look at Chase, and sarcastically says, “But the best part was having to hear her tell our grandmother about the amazing wolf that came to her rescue by scaring off the one that attacked her. Looks like Chase here is her saving grace.”

Chase rolled his eyes, acting like he wasn’t amused by what Cash had just told him, but I could see that it had. He may not want to admit that he did it to protect her because he felt something for her, but I could see through his façade. He could deny all he wanted too, that he didn’t feel for her, but after his little incident with her today, and then him putting his life on the line for her, I knew there was still hope for him.

“I didn’t do it for her. I did it for the pack. It just so happens she makes good bait. We might

want to consider using her to lure him into a trap.” Chase says, trying to act heartless, but once again I could see through his words, but unfortunately Cash couldn’t.

“If you even try to lay another finger on her…” Cash began to say through gritted teeth, bringing back the killer look in his eyes, but Chase was quick to say to him, “Or you will do what? Stand there and hide what you truly are from her, like you did back at the school, too

worried she won’t accept you?”

Cash let out a low growl, and went to lunge off the porch after Chase, but I stopped him by grabbing ahold of his arm, as I said to him, “Not now. Not with Raven here.”

Chase began to chuckle, while he pulled his shirt over his head, as he said to us, “I’m not sticking around here while she is here, pretending we are human just like her.” Before he shifted right on the front lawn, while I turned my head to make sure Raven was still in the

kitchen.
