Chapter 42-2

Thankfully, she was still occupied by our grandmother, and didn’t see a thing, but then Chase leaves out a howl, making her turn to look straight at me, peering into the screen door at her. Laying down the spoon in her hand, I watched her begin to move down the hallway, making me turn to look at Chase, still standing on the front lawn, as if he was waiting for her to see

him.

My heart began to race in my chest, worried how she was going to react to seeing Chase in his wolf form, and how I was supposed to explain this to her? I wasn’t ready for this moment, as I had thought at least a hundred times about how I would explain what we were to her, but this here was never one of the scenarios that played out in my head.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything that I could do to stop what was about to happen, as Raven moved to now open the screen door. As she steps out onto the porch, her eyes quickly move past me, straight towards where Chase is standing, as her eyes widen slightly, but not enough to show that she was in complete fear of him in his wolf form.

“I see you found Chase.” She says to me nonchalantly, as I stare down at her, confused by her choice of words, leaving me speechless for the first time in my life, while I was obviously in

more shock than her, with her seeing him in his wolf form.

“I can explain everything.” Nervously comes from my lips, as I try to think of how to start this confession to her, now that Chase has forced it upon me.

Raven’s eyes narrowed as she turned to look at me, before she said, “Please tell me you didn’t

hurt him.”

“Hurt him?” I said under my breath as a thought, wondering why she was asking me this, but then Cash jumped into the conversation, wrapping his arm around her, as he said, “Chase is fine.” Before his eyes moved to mine, and he continued to say to her, “You just missed him.”

My head snapped back to look at the lawn, as I let out a long exhale of relief that Chase had run off before Raven could see him, and that it was his jeep she had been looking at.

“Raven, why don’t you finish helping our grandmother in the kitchen, while Chance and I finish the work that our father wanted us to do.” Cash suggested to Raven, making me turn back to look at them, knowing that Cash probably wanted to talk to me alone about the stunt Chase just pulled.

“Yeah, I can do that.” She says as she moves to turn to go back inside, but I stop her, as I tell Cash through our mind link to give us a minute alone.

I waited for Cash to step off the porch, before I asked her, “Are you okay? Cash told me about

your close encounter.”

Raven shook her head, before she said to me, “Actually, I’m fine. It’s nice to know that I’m not losing my mind, and to know that the thing that tried to attack me was just a wild animal. Although I think I will be a bit more careful of my surroundings from now on.”

“Yeah, I think that’s a good idea, but I want you to know that the wolves around here normally aren’t like that. This one has something wrong with it, and the game warden is looking into it. Hopefully he will find it soon and none of us will have to worry about it.”

“Maybe it has rabies? I hope the other wolf that chased after him didn’t get infected. If it wasn’t for him, God knows what would have happened.” She says to me with the look of worry now on her face, making it hard for me to hold a straight face, as I pictured Chase in my mind foaming at the mouth, making him even more of an ass than he already was.

“I’m sure the other wolf is okay, and I am grateful that he was there to protect you, since I wasn’t there for you. You know the wolves are sacred to our land, and they are seen as our protectors. I hope this foul experience you had with this rogue doesn’t deter you from seeing

them as so.”

“Protectors?” She asked, as her head tilted to the side, interested in hearing more about

them, which I was happy to know, but I didn’t want to go into this with her right now.

“It’s a long story, but maybe the two of us can talk about this when I take you out Friday night.

”

A smile slowly formed on her face, as her eyes became bashful, while she asked, “Chance are you asking me out on a date with you?”

“Yeah, I guess you could say that.” I said as a grin formed on my face, happy to see that she was excited to spend some time with me alone.

“Then it’s a date.” She said as she moved to stand on her tippy-toes, before placing a kiss on my lips, as if to seal the date.

I stood there with a huge grin on my face, as I watched her walk back into the house, turning once to give me a smile, before she disappeared into the kitchen with my grandmother, grateful that I had avoided the inevitable with her, at least for now. Unfortunately, after the little stunt Chase had just pulled, I was sure that my time for telling her was running out, as I was sure that he was going to eventually be caught by her with his antics.

“How is it that I am the one that was here to comfort her, and you are the one that lands the date with her?” I hear Cash say in my head, making me realize that he had been listening to us this whole time.

“Haven’t you heard? Nice guys always finish last.” I said back to him as I let out a chuckle, before I headed towards the barn with a huge smile on my face, knowing what happened today didn’t affect the bond between us.

If anything, it slowly opened the door to our world to Raven, and hopefully, by her seeing Chase’s wolf protecting her, she may just be more accepting of us when I finally explain everything to her. But for now, I need to figure out why this rogue Alpha is on our land, and what exactly he wants with Raven.
