Chapter 43-1

Cash’s POV

“This better be good, Cash. I can’t believe I let you talk me into meeting you at a cemetery at dusk.” Mazie said to me, as I could see her senses were on high alert, as she looked around paranoid at every little sound we heard.

After talking further with Chance about what had happened, I decided to head into town and meet up with Mazie to explore the cemetery with her. Something felt off with the rogue Alpha’s behavior, especially knowing that he had led Chase to our sacred grounds, making

me wonder if this wolf knew our lands.

Our father was still out with our best trackers, trying to find a lead on what happened to Josie, but something was telling me that our rogue Alpha was responsible for her disappearance too. I wished Chance had just told our father about Raven’s little encounter at school the other day, but without solid evidence and the stressful workload our father had

been under, Chance thought that it would be best to handle this on our own.

That’s why I decided to head out to the cemetery to see if I couldn’t find solid evidence to provide for our father, so Chance would feel compelled to finally go to him for help.

“Where exactly did Chance say he found Chase?” Mazie asks, as we head deep into the cemetery, towards where our great ancestors were laid to rest.

“He said to head northeast, past the three large oak trees.”

“Well, there is the three large oak trees, so I guess we are heading in the right direction, but I don’t think I have ever been this deep within the cemetery before.” Mazie tells me, as she looks a bit nervous, being within the confines of the tall metal fence that surrounds the cemetery like a prison.

To be honest, I wasn’t digging being here either, but if there was a chance to discover anything about this rogue Alpha to keep Raven and our pack safe, then I was going to take my chances, especially knowing how stressed out our father was.

“I’ve never seen half these names before.” Mazie says now as she points at the last names engraved on the headstones, before she asks, “Do you think they left the pack, or do you think they had no offspring?”

Honestly, I had no clue, as the dates on the headstones dated back well over a hundred years ago, way before my father and my grandfather’s time as Alphas.

“I’m not sure what happened to them, but there seems to be at least a half dozen names that

I don’t recognize. It almost makes me wonder if something happened back then, as the dates of deaths all seem to be the same date.”

“Do you think it could have been a rogue attack? Or maybe even a war between packs for territory? My grandfather used to tell me stories about how bad the times used to be before territories were drawn and alliances were made. I thought that they were made-up stories to scare me into thinking that it could happen again, but by the looks of things here, I’m beginning to wonder if there was some truth to those stories.”

Unfortunately, I had never gotten the chance to hear stories like these, because my grandfather had passed before I was born, and my father never liked to talk about our past, even though he was the Alpha. Mazie’s family, on the other hand, came from a long line of Betas, and her father was currently my father’s Beta, making me believe that the stories her grandfather told her were true. If this was the case, then it looks as if we had lost half of our pack during whatever kind of battle it was.

“Cash, come here. You are going to want to see this.” Mazie calls out to me from over her shoulder, as she stands at the foot of a larger headstone.

“What is it?” I asked her as I moved to her side, but it didn’t take long for me to realize what

she was talking about.
