There was no doubt in my mind that the eyes that were staring back at me right now belonged to a wolf, as they resembled the red eyes of the rogue wolf that had haunted my dreams since the day in the locker room. My breathing at that moment became unsteady, as I held onto the top of the headstone that had caught my fall, with a death grip, while my eyes remained fixated on the two glowing eyes staring back at me.

As the eyes slowly moved towards me from the shadows of the trees, my ears began to throb and ring, as my heart pounded heavily against my chest, while my mind raced with ideas of what I should do. Of course, my first thought was to run and scream for help, but as I looked around at an empty cemetery on the far outskirts of town, I realized there was nowhere to run, and no one to hear me.

My second thought was to play dead, but that, of course, was the stupidest thing that could have come across my mind, as I would just be a sitting duck for the wolf to maul me to death like Josie. I quickly dismissed that thought, realizing how foolish I was for even thinking it, as I slowly moved around to the other side of the headstone, placing it between me and the wolf that was emerging from the shadows.

My eyes now became fixated on the golden eyes glowing back at me, and as I stared deep into them, a weird sensation came over me, as my heart slowly began to slow down. A sense of peace washed over me, blanketing me at that moment, as if I felt a connection with this wolf on a spiritual level, while it dawned on me that this was the wolf that had saved me in the parking lot the other day at school.

Once again, Chance’s words about the wolves being the protectors of this town flooded back to me, making me wonder if his words held truth to them. With my heart now beating steadily, and my ears no longer ringing, I slowly stepped around the headstone, not wanting to show fear towards this wolf, but to show him appreciation for saving my life the other day,

in the hope that he was my protector.

But as I stepped around the headstone, the wolf came to a halt, narrowing his eyes at me, as a low growl radiated from his chest, making me want to step back around the headstone, but something inside of me told me to hold my ground against him. It felt like I was now in a showdown as we both just stood there, staring into each other’s eyes, as I held back the fear and uncertainty I had at that moment towards him, praying that he wouldn’t attack me.

As the seconds passed by, and his eyes slowly unnarrowed, something told me this wolf had no intention of hurting me. Once again, that voice that should have been in the back of my head, telling me that this was a bad idea, wasn’t there, as I reached my hand out to the wolf, thinking that he would come to me, like a damn dog. My jester towards him caused him to

take a step back, as if he was the one unsure and afraid of me, shocking me.

“Please don’t be afraid of me. I just want to thank you for saving my life.” I said to him, as if he could understand me, which I strongly doubted, but it was the only way I knew how to let

I

him know how much I appreciated what he did for me.

The wolf tilted his head to the side, as he continued to stare at me, like he was now unsure of what to do, while my hand remained reached out towards him. Surprisingly, the wolf took a step towards me, as his eyes moved to my hand, reaching out to him, and I held steady, even though I honestly was about to pee my pants, being this close to a massive wolf like him.

With each step that he took towards me, I felt my heart skip a beat, as the hand that I held in front of me began to shake unsteadily, while his true size began to show itself as he neared me. He was so close now, that the tips of my fingers could reach out and touch his silver fur, but I didn’t want to make an abrupt movement that would frighten him. I knew that I needed to let him close the final distance between us, as I was the one that needed to gain his trust.

Holding my breath, I stared into his eyes, which now felt so familiar to me, as he took his final step towards me, brushing his neck up against my hand, as his eyes remained on me. I was half scared to let the breath out that I was holding, worried that I would frighten him away, or worse yet, spook him into thinking I would hurt him.

In all reality, I should be the one that was afraid of him right now, but for some reason I wasn’t. Instead, I felt connected somehow to him, especially as my hand now grazes his flesh beneath his fur. Unable to stop my desire to pet him, I began to gently caress his fur, earning myself a slight purr sound from him.

Honestly, I couldn’t believe at that moment that I was petting a wolf, not just any wolf, but a huge beautiful wild creature that I would never have thought to be this friendly. But just when I was feeling comfortable near him, the sound of a howl filled the surrounding air, making him abruptly take a step back, as he turned his head towards where the howl had come from.

I watched as his eyes widened, as I could swear the look of fear now haunted them, before he let out a growl, and turned his head back towards me. I could have sworn at that moment, I heard a male’s voice in my head say, “Run!” Putting the fear of God in me, making me do exactly that, as the wolf took off in the direction of the howl, and I ran as fast as I could out of the cemetery, praying that the howl wasn’t from the rogue wolf.
