Chapter 48-2
Chance’s eyebrows furrowed as he looked at me with a look of confusion on his face, before he asked me, “Are you sure you had it with you at the library? I mean it has been a stressful week. Maybe you are mistaken.”
I knew it all sounded crazy, and I was a fool for mentioning it to him, making him probably question my own mental state at that moment. Not wanting him to worry about me, like he was worried about Mazie, I said to him, “You’re probably right. It has been a stressful week, and there’s no other explanation of how it could have gotten into my locker.”
“You know what, give me your phone.” Chance now says to me, making me wonder what he was going to do with it, but instead of questioning him, I pulled my phone out, handing it to
him.
Chance looked at both sides of my phone first, before he turned on my home screen, asking me, “Did you check to see if anything seemed off when you opened it?”
“Yeah, there were some pictures I had taken that I noticed were deleted.” I admitted to him, as I watched him bring my phone up to his nose, like he was smelling it.
“Did you just sniff my phone?” I asked him, as a growl rumbled from his chest, making me wonder if he had smelt someone’s perfume on it, maybe like Jessica’s.
A nervous chuckle comes from his lips, as he now hands me my phone back, while he says
to me, “I thought I smelt someone’s scent on it, but I was mistaken. Honestly, I wouldn’t read too much into it. My guess is you left it in the library like you said you did, and one of our elders found it there. I am sure they looked through your photos to see who your phone may belong to, and, well, let’s face it, they aren’t that great with technology and accidentally erased some of your photos. Seeing that it belonged to you, they must have turned it into the school, where I am sure Mrs. Jacobs had it put in your locker.”
Even though I hadn’t left it in the library, his story did make a lot of sense, as I was sure that the elders paid their respects to the dead, especially to the group of headstones I was standing at when I had lost it.
“You’re probably right.” I said, agreeing with him, as I put my phone back in my pocket, now feeling foolish about being paranoid about it all day.
“Good. Now that your phone mystery is solved, shall we escape Beaumont and enjoy a peaceful evening together?” Chance asks, as he reaches over, taking my hand into his, before he pulls out of the school’s parking lot, heading south towards the city of Ashburgh that I had flown into when I arrived here.

Chance was making an effort to try and take my mind off everything that happened this week, by trying to make small talk with me, but what I really wanted to talk to him about was the story that he had promised to tell me about on our date. Even though I had agreed to leave Beaumont behind us for the evening, my mind was still stuck there, especially with the encounter that I had with the wolf last night.
Knowing that Chance’s story might hold answers to one of the million questions running through my head, I said to him, “You said that you would tell me the story about the wolves on our date, and how they are the protectors of Beaumont. Since we have time, and we are alone, could I hear the story now?”
To my surprise, Chance turned, giving me a benign smile, before he said to me, “Actually, I was hoping that you would ask, because I think it’s time that you learned some of our town’s history, especially with everything that has been happening.”
