“I know this may be a lot for you to take in, and it might be too much for you to accept right now, but Beaumont isn’t your normal little town in the mountains in this region like others. It wasn’t founded by a group of settlers, but by a pack of wolves and their Alpha that still watches over the town and its people after all these years. For many years, the wolves and the towns’ people have lived in harmony together and the wolves are seen as what you would call our spiritual animals. Like I told you, they are protectors of our town, and the wolf that tried to attack you and that killed Josie isn’t a part of the Alphas’ pack, but a rogue wolf that is trying to destroy the pack and the people that live within the safety of the Alpha wolves’ territory.”

“So, the wolf that came to my rescue at school is the Alpha of the pack that watches over the town?” I curiously asked Chance, wondering if I had truly met the Alpha wolf that he spoke of, thinking how crazy it would be that the Alpha wolf had chosen to save me and show himself

to me.

“Yes, he is actually one of three born of Alpha’s blood that are sworn to look over our territory.

“Sworn?” I asked him, confused by his choice of words, wondering how an animal could pledge itself to do so.

“It’s hard to explain, but when an Alpha pup is born, it is like their born instinct and destiny to protect the pack and their territory. I guess you could say it’s in their DNA.”

“Have you seen these Alpha wolves, yourself?” I asked him, wondering if one of the Alpha wolves had shown themselves to Chance too.

Chance hesitated for a minute, making me wonder why he was hesitant to answer my question, but then he finally said to me, “Yes. Their den is on my family’s ranch, but we keep their whereabouts hidden from outsiders.”

I now know why he was hesitant to tell me, but he had to know that I would never do anything that would bring harm to them, especially after the Alpha wolf had put his life in danger to

save my own.

“I promise you that I will never speak to anyone about their whereabouts.”

Chance turns to look at me, as a soft smile forms on his face, before he says, “I know you won’t. That is why I decided to tell you.” As he gives my hand a slight squeeze.

“Do you think that someday after the rogue wolf is dealt with, that you could take me out on the horses and show me the wolves’ den?”

A shocked look formed instantly on Chance’s face, before he said to me, “Wait. You want me

to take you out in the mountains, in the middle of nowhere to see them? Aren’t you the least bit scared of them after being attacked?”

Shaking my head, I knew that I should be afraid of them, but I wasn’t. Yes, I was afraid of the rogue wolf that had tried to attack me, but as for the Alpha wolf that had saved me, I didn’t feel fear towards him. Instead, I felt grateful to him for saving my life, and I couldn’t help but feel a connection to him, wondering if he was my spiritual animal that Chance spoke of.

“I know it must sound crazy to you, but I’m not afraid of them. Plus, aren’t you the one that just said that they are protectors of the people of the town?”

“Yes, but…” He began to say, but stopped, as he shook his head, before he said, “You’re unbelievable. Here I was worried that you might rethink staying in Beaumont, because of everything that has happened to you involving the wolves.”

The truth was, I had nowhere else to go right now, and I was stuck here until this school year was over, regardless of what happened in Beaumont. Besides, I had a mystery now to solve, involving my mother, and I wasn’t going to rest until I knew the truth about what happened all those years ago to make her leave.
