Moonlight In Chains (Trinity and Asher) novel Chapter 171

CHAPTER 171

The sun dipped low, painting the forest in molten gold, but the wolf’s tension had already set the clearing ablaze with unease. Its body coiled, muscles taut, head held high, ears flicking toward the treeline where the road from town twisted out of view. I felt it before I saw it. A familiar energy, small but undeniable,

carried on the wind like a whisper.

Emily.

The wolf’s growl vibrated through the air, low and throaty, more like a warning than a threat, but I knew instinctively it wasn’t directed at us. Every hair along its spine rose, the weight of its focus clear in the way it shifted, paw scraping against the pen floor.

It knows she’s coming.I muttered, more to myself than anyone else.

Asher’s hand touched my arm, grounding me. Then we need to make sure nothing interferes until she’s here. Stay calm. Let it see you as steady.

I nodded, though the tight knot in my stomach wouldn’t ease. The wolf wasn’t just reacting. It was calculating. Reading the energy that Emily carried through the forest. And there was more to it than fear or aggression. Something deep and recognizably instinctual, something that tied the wolf to her in a way none of us could explain yet.

The wind carried the faint sound of tires on gravel. I turned toward the sound. The twins were driving, Emily sandwiched between them in the passenger seat, looking out the window. The wolf’s growl intensified, rumbling like distant thunder. Its massive head whipped toward the approaching car, nostrils

flaring.

David, stationed with the other guards, frowned. Whoa. That’sintense.

It’s not us it’s reacting to.” I said sharply, drawing everyone’s attention. It’s her. It’s Emily. Don’t make

sudden moves. Let it assess.

Emily’s eyes widened as she saw the wolf, her grip tightening on the edge of the car door. She didn’t flinch away, didn’t yell. She simply held her gaze on the pen. And the wolf responded. Its posture shifted again, cautious but tense, aware that she wasn’t a threat, but aware nonetheless.

As the car rolled closer and finally stopped, the twins jumped out first, moving to help Emily out. I held up a hand. Wait.” I said. Let it settle before anyone gets too close.”

They froze. The wolf’s eyes followed their every move, amber orbs glowing faintly in the fading light. And for the first time, it twitched as if trying to decidefriend or foe?

Emily finally stepped out of the car, slow and deliberate. Her eyes never left the wolf. For a heartbeat, nothing happened. Then the creature lowered its body slightly, chest brushing against the ground, but it didn’t relax fully. Its tail flicked, tense, muscles coiled. It wasn’t aggressive. It was alert and ready, but clearly unsettled.

OkayLiam muttered, running a hand through his hair. This is new.

It’s not new.I said, eyes narrowing. We just didn’t realize how strong her influence over the twinsand apparently over anything with instincts connected to wolvesis becoming.

The twins exchanged glances, unease creeping into their usually confident stances. Emily’s presence had changed them. They were protective, attentive, almost to a fault. And the wolf’s reaction had made that even more obvious.

I walked closer to the pen, hands raised. Easy. No sudden movements. It’s not going to hurt anyoneit’s reacting, that’s all.

Emily stepped forward slightly, hand outstretched, as if trying to communicate silently with the massive creature. The wolf’s head tilted, muscles relaxing fractionally, but its eyes remained fixed on her.

I don’t like it.Kira whispered, moving closer to Liam, keeping her pistol low and out of sight. It’s huge. Way bigger than it should be, and it’s focused on herand them.

I know.I said quietly. That’s why we need to control the environment. Calm energy. No weapons visible. Let it sense that we’re steady.

Emily didn’t say anything. She simply stood there, almost rooted in place. Her eyes flicked briefly to the twins, then back to the wolf. For the first time, I noticed a subtle shift in her energy. Not fear, not dominance, but influence. A kind of magnetism. The twins mirrored her posture, their movements slower, almost submissive, their focus split between her and the wolf.

I frowned. This is gettingweird. Her presence is affecting them more than usual.”

Asher’s voice was low in my ear. I’ve noticed. Subtle, butpowerful. We’ll need to watch it. Make sure it doesn’t spiral.”

Emily’s gaze never wavered from the wolf, and the wolf finally let out a low whine. Less threatening, more questioning. Its paws dug slightly into the ground, claws brushing the reinforced flooring of the pen. Its ears twitched as if listening, focusing on some unspoken connection between it and Emily.

What do you want, huh?She whispered, soft but firm, as though speaking directly to it. The twins flinched slightly, but didn’t interrupt.

The wolf lowered its head slowly, eyes narrowing in concentration, nostrils flaring. It had chosen to wait, to assess, but the intent was clear. It wasn’t going to be passive for long.

Everyone back a bit.I warned, glancing at the guards and the twins. Don’t crowd it. Let it react on its own.

Emily’s calm stance contrasted sharply with the tension around her. She didn’t flinch when the wolf bared its teeth slightly, didn’t step back when its massive frame shifted toward her. And the twins, usually hyperaware, ready to jump in at the slightest provocationdidn’t move. It was as though her presence alone was keeping them from stepping forward, almost like a silent command.

The wolf crouched lower, every muscle flexing. Then, in one smooth motion, it bolted. Not through the fence, but toward the far side of the pen, paw scraping the reinforced wall. The sound reverberated through the clearing.

Emily flinched slightly, but held her ground. Her voice remained steady. It’s okay. It’s okay.”

The twins exchanged a glance, then mirrored her stance, standing motionless as the wolf paced, eyes locked on Emily. I could feel my pulse quicken. This wasn’t normal behavior. It wasn’t just reacting. It was recognizing something in her energy, something that demanded attention, but not submission.

David muttered, That’snot just instinct. That’s awareness.

Exactly.I said. It knows something about her. Something we don’t.”

Asher stepped closer to me, whispering, It’s not going to attack. Not now. But it’s definitely stressed. And it’s communicating with her in ways we can’t read.”

Emily’s hand twitched slightly, almost as if trying to mimic the wolf’s stance, to show that she wasn’t a threat. The wolf paused midstep, head cocked, tail flicking slowly. And then, for the first time, it let out a low, vibrating growl. Not loud, not threatening, but full of intention.

The twins shifted subtly behind her, their hands brushing the edge of the fence. Normally, they would have stepped in by now, but they didn’t. Their loyalty to her, whatever strange influence she wielded, was evident. Emily had become the center of attention for both them and the wolf, and the dynamic was shifting fast.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady my own nerves. Okay.I said, voice calm but firm. We need a plan. It can’t stay like this all night. And we need to figure out exactly what it’s reacting to. We’re going to rotate shifts. One of us with it at all times, the rest get sleep. But no sudden movements, no talking too loud, and no one except Emily should try to influence it yet. She’s the only one it’s responding to.

Emily didn’t respond verbally. She only nodded slightly, eyes fixed on the wolf.

The creature took a step back, pacing slowly now, circling in the pen. Its gaze never left her. It sniffed the air, then back to her, then toward the forest. Every movement was deliberate, measured.

Look.” I said to the group, keeping my voice quiet but authoritative, This is far from done. Whatever it is, it’s awake, aware, and completely keyed into her. That means we need to learn fast what its instincts are telling us. If it’s already this reactive, tomorrow could beworse.

Asher’s arm brushed against mine, grounding me. We’ll handle it. One shift at a time. Stay calm, keep her safe, and keep the wolf calm.”

I glanced at Emily again. She was unnervingly still, calm despite the obvious tension radiating from the creature. But there was a flicker in her eyes. Something I couldn’t place. Fear? Understanding? Power?

Whatever it was, the wolf responded. And that was what mattered.

The sun set fully behind the trees, leaving long shadows across the clearing. The wolf crouched low, chest brushing the ground, and let out another low rumble. It wasn’t backing down. It wasn’t aggressive, yet, but

its focus was unwavering.

And in that moment, we all understood the unspoken truth: this night was only the beginning.

The wolf’s awareness, Emily’s influence, the twinsobedience. All of it pointed to something bigger, something that none of us could predict.

And as the first stars appeared in the sky, its eyes locked onto hers.

It was ready. And so were we.
