The silhouette moved closer through the shadows, and my heart thumped in my chest, steady and sharp. My body was on instinct, muscles coiling, senses sharpening. The wolf, or whatever it truly was, didn’t hesitate. It didn’t snarl, it didn’t growl. It just moved with a measured, deliberate pace,
fixed on me.

The broken trees and debris of the abandoned Redwater Falls packhouse cast jagged shadows across the clearing. I could see the tension in its muscles even from this distance. Every step it took was calculated, careful, and I could feel its awareness brushing against my mind like a cold
wind.
The former alpha, standing a few feet to my left, stiffened, one hand resting on the hilt of a hunting knife strapped to his belt. “Don’t make sudden movements.” He warned quietly. “Whatever this is,
it’s not like any wolf you’ve dealt with before.”
I nodded, keeping my weight balanced, my eyes never leaving the creature. Its massive form was
awe–inspiring, terrifying, yet strangely… deliberate. There was intelligence here. It wasn’t just a
wolf. It was thinking, deciding, testing.
The wind shifted, carrying a faint metallic scent. Blood, or perhaps something older, something lingering. I inhaled sharply and forced myself to breathe normally, keeping my outward calm. Panic
would only provoke it.
Emily. Her face flickered in my mind, and I felt a flicker of unease. Why did it seem… wary of her?
That was the first time anything had felt unnatural in this scenario. Wolves weren’t afraid of
humans or wolves in human form. Not like this. Not if they’d been trained or socialized. And yet,
there was hesitation in its movement.
The wolf stopped a few yards from me, lowering its massive head slightly. Its eyes, golden and
piercing, held mine, and a wave of awareness hit me like a pulse. I froze, my mind suddenly filled with an unspoken message. Not words exactly, but a feeling, an imprint, a mental nudge.
You.
I blinked, heart thundering. My instincts screamed, but the sensation continued, pressing into my
mind like a weight. You are… here.
I exhaled slowly, trying to steady my thoughts. It wasn’t hostile. Not yet. But it was probing, testing.
Learning.
“Do you feel that?” The former alpha asked, his voice low, tense. “It’s… communicating with you.
Mentally. Wolves don’t usually do that, not this… clearly. Not these kinds of wolves.”
I nodded subtly, keeping my eyes locked on the wolf. The pulse hit again, sharper this time, like it
was trying to make sure I understood. Protect.

I frowned. Protect? My mind raced. Protect who? Protect what?

The wolf’s gaze flicked to a spot behind me, as if acknowledging something I hadn’t noticed yet. The former alpha followed the glance, frowning. “That… that’s unusual. It’s aware of more than just
you.”
The creature shifted slightly, ears twitching. Its fur bristled for a moment, though it didn’t move
closer aggressively. Instead, the energy around it thickened. The air felt charged, almost electric.
Every hair on my arms and the back of my neck stood on end.
“I… I don’t know why.” I said slowly, voice low. “It’s reacting… to something, or someone.”
The former alpha’s eyes narrowed. “It might be reacting to you, but also… something else. I’ve seen this before. Wolves like this–they pick up on intentions, secrets, unspoken tensions. They know
more than you realize.”
I swallowed. My mind went to Emily. The wolf’s hesitation. Her presence in Moonflare. Could it sense her? The pulse I had felt. It had almost carried a warning.
The ‘wolf’s body tensed suddenly, muscles coiling like a spring. Its head jerked slightly, ears flattened for a fraction of a second, and it emitted a low, vibrating growl that wasn’t directed at me, but at the space between me and the treeline.
Something was approaching. Something unseen. The tension in the air thickened, a prelude to action. I could feel it instinctively. My pulse quickened, but I forced my breath to remain steady, grounding myself.
“Stay calm.” I murmured, more to myself than to the former alpha. But my eyes stayed on the wolf, reading every subtle movement.
The growl deepened, resonating through the clearing. Whatever it was sensing had crossed some boundary. The wolf’s stance shifted, broad shoulders squared, muscles rippling. It was preparing to react, but not recklessly. Like a predator sizing up its environment before striking.
I took a slow step backward, careful not to appear threatening. The former alpha mirrored me, still watching intently. “It’s picking up on something.” He muttered. “And whatever it is… it’s close.”
My mind raced. Was it another wolf? A rival? Something human? Whoever, or whatever, it was, the massive wolf was aware of it and focused entirely on it, not me. Not yet.
I felt a flicker of unease. Its gaze flicked past me, and suddenly, the wolf leaned closer, head tilting slightly. That pulse hit me again, stronger this time, almost like a push into my mind. Danger.
I swallowed hard. “It’s… warning me. Or showing me that it knows something’s coming.”
The forest suddenly seemed to tense around us. Leaves stilled, the wind died down, and the shadows deepened unnaturally. I could feel my heartbeat hammering in my ears.

“Get ready.” The former alpha murmured, voice tight. “Whatever it senses… we’re about to find out.”
From the edge of the clearing, movement flickered. A shadow detached itself from the trees. My pulse spiked. The wolf growled again, low and vibrating, warning the intruder without yet breaking
its composure.
I felt the mental nudge again. Protect. My hands clenched into fists. My senses flared. I could feel the wolf’s awareness merging with mine, guiding, directing. It wasn’t hostile toward me. It was… cooperative. Trying to communicate. Trying to warm.
The shadow stepped forward, revealing a figure that moved with practiced stealth, its presence deliberate. My breath caught. I didn’t recognize it. And yet, the wolf’s focus intensified, like it had been waiting for this moment.
Emily’s face flashed in my mind. The wolf’s earlier hesitation. The mental pulses. Something connected here, something I didn’t yet understand.
I looked at the former alpha. His eyes were wide, and his usual confidence seemed strained. “You… you didn’t tell me it would react like this.” He said quietly.
“I didn’t know it would.” I whispered, keeping my eyes on the approaching figure. My body tensed,
ready for anything.
The figure paused at the treeline, just at the edge of visibility. The wolf’s growl deepened, resonant, vibrating through my chest. Its fur bristled, tail stiff. Its stance was predatory but protective.
Focused entirely on the intruder.
And then, in a moment that froze me, the wolf lunged. Not at the intruder, but forward, crashing against the reinforced fence around the meeting hall. Its roar shook the air, and the ground
beneath our feet seemed to tremble.
The pulse in my mind hit me harder than before, clear and insistent. You must act. Now.
I froze, heart hammering. The intruder was coming closer, moving with a purpose. The wolf’s attention was fixed, unwavering. Every instinct in my body screamed danger.
“Whatever that is…” I muttered, voice tight, “it’s coming for all of us.”
The shadow stepped fully into the clearing. And as the last rays of sunlight faded behind the trees,
I saw a flash of something metallic in its hand, a glint that caught the wolf’s gaze and made it rear
back slightly, hackles raised.
The intruder moved again, slower now, deliberate. The wolf growled, low and menacing, the air
vibrating with tension.
I swallowed, pulse racing, and whispered under my breath, “This isn’t going to end quietly.”
The former alpha took a cautious step forward. “No. It’s not.”

And then, before anyone could make a move, the intruder raised their head, revealing a face obscured by shadow. And the wolf’s growl cut off abruptly, replaced with a deep, vibrating hum of
recognition.
My stomach dropped. It knew them.
And in that instant, I realized… this wasn’t just an intruder.
This was personal.
