Chapter 681
Rex leaned in, dropping his voice low, close enough that only jimmy could hear. “I’m telling you, you would neve guess in a million years who Franklin’s actually been seeing on the side, It’s…”
He didn’t finish.
Because Jimmy had spotted Maggie too.
Rex’s words landed somewhere in Jimmy’s peripheral awareness. He’d caught enough of it to know where the sentence was going, and he genuinely didn’t want to know the rest. He reached over and gave Rex, a single, unhurried pat on the shoulder. The kind that said drop it without making a thing of it. Then he straightened up and said, easy as anything, “You guys go ahead and talk. I’m going to go say hi to Mr. Gray and them.”
And then he walked away.
Rex stood there for a second.”
”
Yves blinked, took a moment to process what had just happened, then looked at Rex with genuine confusion written all over his face, “Did Jimmy just voluntarily go over to say hi to Johnny and that group? Since when do they have anything to do with each other?”
Rex had been wondering the same thing. He was quiet for a beat before he said, almost more to himself than to Yves, “Well, Old Mr. Hall and my dad both think pretty highly of Johnny. And…” He paused. “Maggie. Probably has something to do with that.”
Yves turned it over in his head, then nodded, “Yeah, okay. That tracks,”
Glen noticed Jimmy heading their way before anyone else did.
He didn’t need more than a second to figure out why. His expression didn’t shift much, but something behind his eyes went flat, and he went still in the way people do when they’re choosing not to react. He didn’t say anything. Just stood there, watching.
Jimmy walked up and didn’t make a point of acknowledging Glen directly. He greeted Mr. Gray first, kept it easy and brief, and then let his attention drift, in what looked like the most natural way imaginable, over to Maggie. His voice was light, like he was just making conversation. “It’s been a while. How have you been?”
Maggie paused just a half-second too long. “…Pretty good.”
Jimmy nodded, then added, “My dad was actually hoping to take you to dinner tomorrow. Any chance you’re free?”
He said it the same way he’d said everything else. Relaxed. No pressure in his tone at all. But the words sat a little differently in Maggie’s head. She found herself turning the invitation over, wondering whether it was really his father doing the asking, or whether Jimmy had just found a convenient way to frame it
