Chapter 682
Chapter 682
Maggie caught them in her peripheral vision and felt her expression cool without quite meaning to. She shifted her gaze away, not rude, just… gone. No greeting, no acknowledgment.
Logan looked at Maggie with something complicated moving behind his eyes, the kind of look that might’ve been an apology or might’ve just been discomfort, but either way he didn’t say anything. Janice barely glanced at her at all. A second, maybe two, and then her attention moved on, like Maggie was just another face in the room she didn’t
recognize.
On the other side of the venue, the mood was considerably lighter.
After Dr. Mercer had made his rounds and said hello to a few old acquaintances, he’d gravitated toward Franklin, and the two of them had fallen into easy conversation. They were talking shop, mostly: the main direction of Wilson Group’s current projects, and the most recent work coming out of Dr. Mercer’s research institute. A lot of ground to cover, and neither of them seemed to be running out of things to say.
Most of it was AI-adjacent, and Julia had been listening closely. When she found the right opening, she stepped in and offered a thought or two of her own. The perspective she brought was clean and specific, the kind that came from actual depth. Dr. Mercer paused, looked at her with what appeared to be genuine attention, and asked, “Ms. Brown, is this your field as well?”
“It is,” Julia said, smiling. She gave him the short version of her background: where she’d gotten her PhD, who she’d studied under. Then she added, “You actually came to speak at my school a few years ago. I was in the audience.”
Dr. Mercer hadn’t known much about Julia before this conversation, and hearing her credentials, her institution, and especially the fact that she’d been mentored by Kewit Smith, that clearly landed. “Smith’s student,” he said, sounding like he was still catching up to the information. “I haven’t kept up with Smith as much as I used to. I genuinely had no idea.”
He studied her for a moment longer. “You look young. I wouldn’t have guessed you’d already finished your doctorate.”
Dr. Mercer’s assistant, who had a sharper read on these things than his boss generally did, jumped in at that point. “From what I understand, Ms. Brown skipped ahead and started university when she was around thirteen or fourteen. Another prodigy.”
