Chapter 1
“What, did you break up with your mysterious boyfriend?”
My brother Jonathan Bennett’s tone was teasing, clearly enjoying the show.
No wonder. For the past three years, I refused to make the relationship public no matter what.
He had advised me long ago:
“What kind of responsibility can a man have if he doesn’t even dare to come home with you to meet your parents?
You’ll break up sooner or later.”
I couldn’t listen to a word of it back then, firmly believing that as long as there was true love, it would last.
In the end, reality slapped me hard in the face.
My tone was flat: “Yeah, we broke up.”
Hearing me so decisive, the other end of the line was quiet for a good while.
“Did he bully you?”
I didn’t feel much anymore, but those words suddenly made my nose sting.

I took a deep breath and shook my head at the empty air:
“No, we parted on good terms.”
“Alright, if he ever dared to bully you, I’d definitely teach him a lesson.”
“Fernando, few men are reliable. If you really want to get married, you might as well find someone of equal social standing. At least it’s practical.”
“Okay, you arrange it. I’ll go back the day after tomorrow.
Just as I hung up the phone.
Alexander pushed the door open and came in: “Who were you on the phone with?”
Afraid he would see that I had been crying, I didn’t turn around:
“A classmate.”
“Hmm.”
He walked right past behind me and went into the study.
In the three years we were together, he had always been this cold.
I used to think that was just his personality, that he couldn’t be affectionate with anyone.
Until last night, when I came back early from a business trip.
I originally wanted to sneak in and give him a surprise.

His study door was always shut tight, but that day it was left ajar.
Warm yellow light spilled through the crack.
I leaned in to knock, only to see Alexander inside with a pained expression.
His eyes were glued to his phone, one hand moving below.
I froze on the spot.
The person on the screen was none other than her.
It was his family’s adopted sister, Efrain Wright.
He was so engrossed that he didn’t even hear me open the front door
and leave.
I sat in a hotel room all night and thought a lot.
I finally understood that Alexander’s coldness towards me over the past three years wasn’t because of his personality.
His refusal to make our relationship public wasn’t because he was afraid my overprotective brother would give him trouble either.
It was all simply because-
He didn’t like me at all. He just needed a cover to hide his feelings for that “sister.”
So, I, who had chased after him back then, was perfectly used as his shield.
