Chapter 3

Lights flashed wildly inside the club.

This used to be one of my favorite places to hang out.

I grew up spoiled, with a fiery and impulsive personality.

My friends all joked that I was a Manhattan socialite firecracker.

At my brother’s college anniversary, I saw Alexander for the first time and was drawn to his icy demeanor.

I beat around the bush asking my brother if he had a girlfriend.

My brother rolled his eyes:

“With that iceberg attitude of his, who would dare get close to him?”

My heart leaped with joy.

He was cold, I was hot-a perfect match.

I started pursuing him fiercely behind my brother’s back.

I even changed my college application preference from Northern Metropolis to Southern Coastal City, where Alexander was.

My brother was furious and scolded me when he found out I changed my preference.

But scolding aside, he still loved me dearly, so he called Alexander and asked him to look after me.

I secretly rejoiced: everything was going according to my plan.

Back then, I thought I was incredibly smart, having outsmarted both Alexander and my brother.

Only now do I realize how pitifully stupid I was.

The waiter led me to the door of the private room.

It was bustling with noise inside.

Someone jeered and asked:

“Alexander, you keep your little girlfriend hidden away so well, rarely bringing her out to meet the guys.

Now that Efrain is back, and she’s your favorite sister.

We gotta ask, who’s more important, the girlfriend or the sister?”

I stopped in my tracks.

Holding my breath, waiting for the answer.

Alexander took a sip of his drink, saying nothing.

Efrain stomped her foot, pouting at him: “Alexander!”

Only then did Alexander smile.

His glass clinked against the marble tabletop.

His cool voice rang out:

“Girlfriends can be replaced, but I only have one sister. Who do you think is more important?”

“Oh man, that’s so cheesy.”

The crowd hooted.

Efrain stood up triumphantly, pointing her finger at more than half the people in the room:

“You, you, and you. You lost the bet, pay up.”

Alexander didn’t understand: “What’s going on?”

Efrain explained:

“They made a bet with me on whether you cared more about your girlfriend or me. The losers have to transfer me two hundred thousand dollars each.”

Amidst a chorus of groans, everyone pulled out their phones to transfer the money.

Alexander watched their exaggerated reactions and chuckled:

“Serves you right!”

I raised my hand and knocked on the door.
