Chapter 5
The gavel fell.
The sound echoed through the dead–silent courtroom.
Everyone froze.
Jasper, Sienna, the spectators–all of them.
Jasper’s face went white.
The anger cracked into disbelief.
His eyes locked onto me–sitting at the bench in my robe, calm and in control.
Sienna’s hands clenched around her case file, knuckles white.
Her eyes darted to Jasper, but he was staring at me like I’d just risen from the dead.
People started whispering.
“A judge? She’s a judge?”
“Wait, Wren Caldwell? Isn’t she the one who-”
“Shut up! You want to get kicked out?”
Callum Ashford, seated at the defense table, looked far less surprised.
In fact, a faint smile tugged at his mouth–like he’d known all along.
He glanced at me briefly, his gaze warm, before turning back to his opponent with his usual sharpness.
I ignored every stare and spoke into the microphone.
“Let’s verify identities for both parties and their counsel.”
The proceedings moved forward, but no one’s mind was on the case.
Jasper went through the motions mechanically, his eyes never leaving me.
When he saw how calm Callum was–how easily we moved in sync–his face crumbled.
Sienna was clearly rattled.
Her voice shook as she gave her opening statement.
Her eyes kept darting around.

Chapter 5
Jasper had to nudge her under the table more than once.
I stayed composed, guiding both sides through evidence and cross–examination.
During cross–examination, Callum struck first.
He challenged the legitimacy of a key piece of evidence Sienna had submitted.
His arguments were sharp, airtight.
Sienna stammered. Sweat beaded on her forehead. She looked at Jasper for help.
Jasper jumped in immediately, defending her and countering Callum’s points.
His skill was undeniable–even rattled, he could build a solid defense.
But then I interrupted him.
“Mr. Reid, focus on the evidence’s relevance and legality. Speculation and emotional arguments won’t be considered.”
Jasper stopped mid–sentence.
He looked at me. His expression unreadable.
I used to be the Wren he could brush off.
Now I was the judge who could shut him down.
The power shift hit him like a slap.
Callum smoothly continued, his rhythm perfectly matching mine.
The trial moved forward in a tense, surreal atmosphere.
Jasper tried to regain control, but every time he made a key point, I calmly pointed out a flaw or a procedural misstep.
For the first time, he was up against someone who knew exactly how he thought–and who was now sitting in judgment.
ments, Jasper was barely holding it together.
both sides, then announced, “This court will issue a ruling at a later date. Court is adjourned.”
avel fell again.
I didn’t look at Jasper or Sienna.
I stood and walked out through the judge’s corridor.
The second the trial ended, the internet exploded.
