“Oh yeah?” Curtis said coolly. “So giving my wife money is an insult now? When it’s your turn to get married, are you gonna keep your wallet shut tight?”

Matthew was so mad at Curtis that his jaw hurt. “Curtis, I know you’re using her. She’s just too kind. Don’t push it.”

Curtis gave Matthew a cold stare. “What rights do you have to say that? She was with you for four years. Did you ever treat her right?”

Matthew fell silent.

He really hadn’t been good to Adriana.

He’d always thought she was too easy to satisfy.

She was too obedient.

He’d wasted those years without ever treasuring her.

“Don’t take it too far … ” Matthew’s voice came out rough.

If Curtis ever dumped Adriana, he swore he’d win her back.

Curtis didn’t even look at Matthew again and just walked off.

In the car, Adriana held the bouquet Curtis had given her, her heart racing.

He actually kept his word.

She smiled and covered her face with her hands.

What was she even doing?

Her fingers stopped against her cheek. She froze, glancing down at her hand.

A ring?

When did that happen? There was suddenly a ring off her left ring finger.

It was a plain band, but it looked elegant and delicate.

She took it off and saw some letters carved inside–it was her and Curtis‘ initials.

She stared in shock.

Curtis got in just as she was turning the ring over in her hand.

“You still have to go to school. A diamond ring would just be annoying. This one suits you better,” Curtis said, sliding it back on her finger.

Adriana felt her eyes sting.

Why did he keep doing things that made her think the wrong way?

It was just a contract marriage. Why a ring at all?

“Is the ring just to mess with Harold?” Maybe Curtis only gave it to her to make Harold mad and force him to call off the engagement with the Bartons.

Curtis watched Adriana quietly before saying, “It’s for you. Do you not like it? It’s from a top designer.”

Adriana stared at the ring, shocked. Under the light, it sparkled like it was glowing–almost brighter than any diamond.

“It must’ve cost a lot, right?” she whispered.

Curtis let out a small laugh. “You’re so tacky.”

Adriana giggled, sliding the ring back on and admiring it for a while.

She kept telling herself it was all pretend. Even if she knew the dream would end someday, she wanted to enjoy it while it lasted.

Her chest felt a little tight. Adriana glanced at Curtis. “When we get divorced, can I keep the ring? I mean…

She was just thinking that their fingers weren’t the same size anyway.

Curtis looked at her. “Already planning the divorce? Do you hate me that much?”

Adriana’s heart jumped. Maybe that was what Bonnie meant about those little games between a sugar daddy and his doll. When he acted all serious, the doll had to play along.

She honestly had no clue how to be sweet.

Maybe she just wasn’t made to be a perfect doll like Bonnie.
