chapter 12 She Was Walking Away

Curtis nodded. “I’ll give you a ride.”

Adriana agreed and quietly walked out with him.

“Adriana!” Matthew’s voice rang out, sharp with anger. She had never gone against him before.

He started to go after her, totally forgetting the crowd at the gala watching everything unfold.

Natasha stepped in and grabbed his arm, her voice a little strained. “Matthew, my dad and a few people are here. Let me introduce you.”

That snapped Matthew out of it. He looked at her and gave a small nod.

Everyone around them, drawn in by the drama, was left stunned. No one could figure out what kind of connection there was between Matthew, Curtis, and that beautiful woman.

“Matthew’s really all in on Natasha, huh? It’s rare to see someone actually in love in our social circle.”

“Natasha knows what she’s doing. Her family needs to get into the Moweland market, so she marries a guy from there. Once the excitement faded, she divorced him and came back for Matthew. Either way, she wins.”

A few socialites whispered quietly among themselves.

Natasha definitely played the game well. She understood when to make her moves, and she married for strategic gain.

She was sure Matthew would wait.

Even though she’d been divorced, returning to Haldoria meant she could still have Matthew and still have every rich wife looking at her with envy.

Hooking her arm through Matthew’s, Natasha shot a pointed look at Adriana walking away.

I’ve underestimated Adriana. She actually got involved with Curtis.

Even though Natasha had spent the past few years overseas, she kept tabs on everything Matthew did.

She knew how men thought. When Adriana popped up she hadn’t paid her much attention. Someone like that wasn’t a real threat.

Natasha believed that as long as she returned, Matthew would still be hers.

So she hadn’t interfered–until now.

Now that she was back, she needed to make sure Adrian walked away on her own.

What she didn’t expect was that Adriana could get close to the Lincolns.

The Lincolns had deep roots in Harborton; they came from old money and had powerful ties. Curtis was one of their standout heirs. Natasha had counted on Mathew being unbeatable in Haldoria, but Curtis was one person he couldn’t afford to cross.

“I’m not feeling great. Let’s head out early,” Matthew said, sounding distracted, his thoughts still on Adriana.

He wanted to find her and ask what the hell she was thinking.

I’ve already told her to stay away from Curtis. Why didn’t she isten?

Natasha glanced at him, a flash of worry in her eyes, bushe kept her composure and smiled. “Okay. Let’s go after you say hi to my dad.

Matthew gave her hand a squeeze in response.

I’m going to marry Natasha. I’ve loved her for years and waited for her to come back.

As for Adriana… she’s just someone I called up when I felt like t.

Curtis drove Adriana back to her apartment.

“Thanks for everything today, Mr. Lincoln,” Adriana said as she got out of the car, giving him a small bow.

She was grateful to him, not just for helping her out at the station, but also for the way he spoke up for her at the gala.

“My offer still stands,” Curtis said. “If you ever decide to marry me, just say the word.”

Adriana didn’t turn him down. That offer was her backup plan for when there was nowhere else to go.

After Curtis drove off, Adriana stepped into her small rental.

She looked around and suddenly felt like a stranger in the place.

Four years ago, Matthew had picked her up from the hospital and brought her here, telling her this would be her home.

She had been so happy that day.

Adriana had never had a space to herself before. Growing up in the orphanage and then staying in shared dorms at school meant she was always around other people.

So this place–this high–end apartment in one of Haldoria’s fanciest neighborhoods–had once meant everything to her.
