Adriana glanced at Matthew. Liana had feelings for him. “But let me tell you something–he’s never going to marry women like us, women with no family background. So your enemy isn’t me.”

Liana glared at her, furious, like she’d just had her secret torn open.

Adriana turned to leave but paused. She looked back and smiled. “Oh, right, I forgot to answer your question. I got into the Architecture Department at Haldoria Institute of Technology with the top score in my county and seventh in the entire state.”

Then she walked away without another word.

What was Liana even bragging about?

Her grades?

She’d understand after a few years in college that in elite schools, good grades were the least impressive thing of all. In fact, having great grades but no family background would only make her a target for

everyone.

Liana clenched her fists, unwilling to accept it.

Adriana was actually that much smarter than her.

“Matthew, is Adriana mad at me?” she asked tearfully, looking up at Matthew.

Matthew hurried to chase after Adriana. “We’ll celebrate another day. Take this card–buy whatever you like.”

He handed her a card and rushed out.

Adriana was afraid he’d catch up, so the moment she stepped outside, she hid in the flower bushes.

When she saw him run off in the opposite direction, she slipped away through another street.

It was getting dark, and the streetlights were already on.

Adriana wandered aimlessly, glancing at her phone every so often.

What was she waiting for? A reply from Curtis?

Her phone kept buzzing, but every notification was from Matthew.

She opened the app, blocked him again, and suddenly the world went quiet.

Adults had to learn to cut ties. Some people and relationships were just meant to end cleanly.

A message popped up. “Adriana, I just arrived in Harborton. I’ll be flying to Haldoria at the end of the month and have three days off. Wanna hang?” It was from Yolanda, followed by a cute sticker.

Adriana smiled. She really did prefer straightforward people.

She sat down on a bench, pressing a hand to her chest as her heartbeat quickened. She opened her period tracker app–it said her period was supposed to start today.

It was always right on time, but this time, nothing.

A few days‘ delay was normal, yet Adriana still walked into a nearby pharmacy and bought a pregnancy test.

What if she really was pregnant?

Her emotions tangled up. She didn’t even know whether she wanted it to be true or not.

If she really was pregnant–and they divorced later–what if the Lincolns wouldn’t let her see her child?

Was she really going to use a baby to secure her future?

She left the pharmacy and kept walking.

The night in Haldoria was beautiful–bright neon, crowds rushing by, everyone chasing their own life.

When she grew tired, she sat by the roadside, watching people hurry home.

Her chest felt empty.

Everyone had a home.

Home was the place where people could rest and recharge after a long day.

But she had nowhere to return to. No home at all.

Around seven, her phone buzzed. Curtis was calling.

She picked up quickly. “Hey, Curtis.”

“Where are you?” His voice was calm but tight, like he was forcing himself not to panic.

“I’m sitting by the road on Northbank Street,” she said honestly.

“Sorry. My phone wasn’t with me earlier. I missed your messages.” He took a breath. “I’m coming to pick you up.”
