Liana ran straight to Matthew and plopped down beside him, grinning. “Yes, I ranked 15th in the whole
state!”
That was huge. In Haldoria, making it 15th in the state basically meant she was a genius.
Adriana smiled. “Congrats, Liana.”
Liana glanced over. “Adriana, what did you get back then?”
Adriana dodged the question: “I ordered a cake to celebrate. It should be here soon, so I’ll just-”
“Wait, Adriana! You’re leaving already? I just got here! Are you mad because I did well?” Liana teased, half- joking.
Adriana shook her head and sat away from them.
Ever since Matthew started supporting Liana four years ago, Adriana had stopped paying attention to her. Liana didn’t care about Adriana either. She only wanted to be close to Matthew.
Sure, Liana was still young, but she was an adult now. She should know the limits between men and women. Yet she clung to Matthew’s arm, acting all cute.
Matthew didn’t seem to mind. In fact, he kept glancing at Adriana, just to see if she’d get jealous.
Adriana stayed quiet, her face calm.
Last year, at Liana’s coming–of–age party, both Matthew and Adriana were there. Matthew had given Liana a brand–new iPhone, worth over ten thousand dollars.
Liana was thrilled and even kissed Matthew on the cheek.
Adriana had been annoyed for days, but Matthew had just shrugged it off. He thought Liana was just a kid, always bubbly and lively.

“Liana, congrats on getting into college. Remember when I first met you crying on the street, begging for my leftover lunch?” Adriana tried to remind Liana to remember her roots. “And now you’re all dressed in designer brands. That outfit can’t have been cheap. Did you buy it with your scholarship? That alone could probably pay your tuition for a while, huh?”
Back then, Liana couldn’t even afford a proper meal. Now she was decked out head–to–toe in Adidas and Nike. Not luxury, but pricey enough–a regular person’s monthly salary. Her shoes alone cost over three thousand dollars.
Her father had been paralyzed in a car crash. Instead of using her scholarship for home expenses, Liana spent it on clothes.
Liana’s smile vanished. “Adriana, what are you trying to say?”
She dropped her head, looking pitiful, eyes flashing red.
Her acting was top–notch–way better than Danielle’s or Nicole’s.

“Matthew, is Adriana mad at me for spending your money? You paid for my school, and I swear I’ll pay you back. I bought this outfit as a reward from my scholarship. I only wore it today for you. Usually, I wouldn’t
even dare.”
Matthew frowned. “Adriana, if you’re mad, take it out on me. Liana just got into college–that’s good news. Don’t take it out on her.”
Adriana laughed.
See? People never really changed!
Old habits died hard.
Matthew had always been like that. If she disagreed with someone, he’d automatically side with the other person.
She’d told him before. It was fine to support Liana, but too much pocket money was dangerous. Girls their age could go off track.
But Matthew wouldn’t listen. He’d call her heartless, saying, “How’s a girl supposed to live on a thousand a month?”
