Chapter 118 The Distance Between Them
After finishing the dumplings, Curtis took Adriana home.
Finished
She wasn’t in the best mood. Being mad at Matthew and Liana didn’t really matter, but her mind was a mess -filled with thoughts of Curtis and Cynthia.
She’d already learned how deep men’s obsession with their first love could go.
She’d been with Matthew for four years and knew there had always been a woman named Natasha in his heart. But she’d never really envied her.
Now, though, she found herself jealous of Cynthia–actually jealous.
Maybe because she knew, deep down, Curtis was a genuinely good man.
When they got home, while Curtis went upstairs to shower, Adriana quietly slipped into the downstairs bathroom and took a pregnancy test.
Sitting on the toilet, she felt her heart pounding.
Deep down, she actually wanted to be pregnant.
She knew that thought wasn’t right, but part of her couldn’t help it—having a child would mean creating a bond between her and Curtis that nothing else could replace.
Even if they got divorced someday, she’d still have a child who belonged to both of them–a child born within their marriage.
Her eyes burned, and she felt ashamed for thinking that way.
But she also knew she’d never been the ambitious type. If she had been, she wouldn’t have let Rufus and Mia bully her back then just because she was scared of dragging the orphanage into trouble.
If she’d had any courage, she wouldn’t have spent four silent years trailing after Matthew.
And if she had more courage, she wouldn’t be holding on to wishful thinking now–pretending not to see
that Curtis still loved another woman.
Minutes passed. The test strip showed only one line.
Her chest tightened painfully.
One line meant she wasn’t pregnant.
Feeling hollow, she wrapped the test in tissue and tossed it into the trash.
No baby this time. When her period came, Eva would probably notice. And if Eva found out, she’d definitely tell Harold.
Then Harold would force Curtis to divorce her again.
Adriana had thought about it–without a child, her marriage to Curtis might not last long.

Chapter 118 The Distance Between Them
Cynthia was back on her feet, and Nicole had returned too. She wasn’t pregnant either.
With all these problems piling up, divorce was only a matter of time.
Her vision blurred. She sniffled, unsure why she suddenly felt so hurt.
Tears spilled down her cheeks. She wiped them away quickly and went upstairs.
Curtis was standing by the window on the phone. He hadn’t gone to shower yet.

“I’ll run the bath,” Adriana said, hurrying into the bathroom before he could see her red eyes. She turned on the water, hoping to hide her mood.
She sat by the tub, waiting for her eyes to clear before stepping out again.
But before she could calm down. Curtis walked in.
He came up behind her, lifted her easily, and set her on the sink.
Startled, Adriana instinctively wrapped her arms around him. “Curtis.”
Her heartbeat quickened. She reached up and began helping him unbutton his shirt.
Curtis tilted her chin up, studying her face. “Were you crying?”
“No, the steam from the bath just got in my eyes.” Adriana said quickly, hugging him tighter so he couldn’t look too closely.
Curtis patted her back gently, as if to soothe her.
She couldn’t stop feeling sad for some reason. Her voice trembled as she asked softly. “Curtis, if I don’t get pregnant this month, will there still be a chance next month?”
Would he even give her another chance?
Curtis froze for a second, then turned her to face him. Her eyes were red and shimmering. “If it were that easy to get pregnant, the world would be overcrowded. We’ll just try again next month.”
Adriana nodded, still feeling miserable.
Curtis smiled faintly. “Is that why you’re upset?”
She shook her head.
“Do you know why Kenneth didn’t drive me today?” Curtis asked, trying to lighten the mood.
She blinked, curious, and shook her head.
