What if they really got divorced before she went abroad? Everything could change.

Sending Mia and Rufus to jail had felt satisfying, but she knew the Langfords and Joneses would eventually
want revenge.
They were quiet now only because they feared Curtis.
But this kind of borrowed power wouldn’t last forever.
Buzz. Her phone vibrated again.
Adriana thought it was another call from the Lincoln family, but this time it was Curtis himself.
“Did you get to the hotel?” Curtis asked.
“Yeah,” Adriana answered softly.
“I bought you some things. Open the door and grab them,” Curtis said gently.
Her ears turned red. Every time he spoke like that, her heart raced. “You bought something?”
She blinked in surprise, and just as she stood up, the doorbell rang.
She hurried over to open it. A hotel staff member stood there holding a heavy grocery bag.
Adriana thanked them, carried it to the bed, and peeked inside. It was full of herbal drinks, several kinds of pads and sleep pants, and a stack of heat packs.
She stared at the items for a moment, then burst into laughter.
“Well … ” Curtis sounded awkward over the phone. “It’s my first time buying that kind of stuff. I didn’t really know what to get.”
“Curtis, thank you,” Adriana said softly, warmth spreading through her chest.
So this was what it felt like to be cared for.
Her heart clenched with an ache she didn’t quite understand.
Curtis was just a good man. Whoever stood in her place as his wife would probably receive the same care,
“The soonest I can get back is next Wednesday,” he said. Four more days.
“There’s no need to rush,” she replied. “I can handle things here.”
Even if Harold showed up, this was a hotel. If she refused to go, he couldn’t force her.
“Call me if anything happens.”
“Okay.” Adriana felt that warmth again.

It felt good–having someone to rely on.

Curtis went quiet for a while, not hanging up. It was like he had things to say but kept swallowing them back.
Finally, he half–joked, “Miss me yet?”
Adriana froze, fingers tightening around the phone.
Did she miss him?
She did. More than she wanted to admit.
“I’m working on handing over the domestic business,” he said softly. “Next year, I plan to shift some focus overseas–maybe spend more time in Pastalia with you.”
Her eyes went wide, heart pounding.
He always said things that made her misunderstand.
“So next year we still won’t get divorced?” she asked nervously, her throat tight.
She always ended up like this–awkward, uncertain.
When she’d been with Matthew, he’d given her the same false hopes, making her believe he actually loved her.
“The Lincolns don’t allow children born out of wedlock,” Curtis said after a long pause. “If a child is born within the marriage, no matter what happens, the couple can’t divorce for three years.”
Adriana blinked in confusion. Why did this family’s rules keep changing?
No one had mentioned that before they got married.
“You really want a divorce that bad?” Curtis finally asked, his voice dropping low.
Adriana didn’t understand what she’d done wrong. Why was he suddenly cold again? “No … ”
Wasn’t he the one who had wanted out?
Just like Bonnie had said, men with money always liked to play the blame game. When they got tired, they never ended things outright–they just pulled away, kept their distance, and waited for the doll to lose patience and end it herself.
Adriana told herself she would be the perfect doll. When Curtis eventually grew tired of her and started pulling away, she’d be the first to ask for a divorce. She’d never let herself become someone he found annoying.
“Curtis,” she said softly, changing the subject, “you must be exhausted. Are you eating properly?”
She slipped back into her gentle tone. “If you’re tired, try to rest.”
