“Mr. Harold, what brings you to Haldoria all of a sudden?” Matthew asked politely.

“Just some family business to handle,” Harold replied cautiously. He didn’t want to admit that he’d come just to check whether Adriana was pregnant.

“Adriana sure knows how to act,” Nicole said bluntly. “Mr. Matthew, you know her best–she’s obviously faking a pregnancy to fool Mr. Harold.”

Harold’s face darkened. He hated people airing family matters in public, but Nicole didn’t have the tact to realize it.

If she weren’t a Barton, he’d never consider such a shallow, brainless girl as a future granddaughter–in–law.

“Mr. Harold, I mean no offense,” Matthew said, glancing at him through the rearview mirror, “but Adriana can’t be pregnant. She was with me for four years.”

Harold’s face turned stony, so Matthew quickly added, “Of course, that’s not the point.”

He then looked at Nicole meaningfully.

Nicole caught on immediately. “Mr. Harold, she was with Mr. Matthew for four years without ever getting pregnant. She’s only been with Curtis a few days–it’s impossible. She’s just pretending.”

Harold’s expression grew colder. “She refuses to cooperate. What am I supposed to do, drag her to the hospital?”

“Actually, it’s easy to get her to behave,” Matthew said lightly, as if in passing. “She’s timid. The orphanage director, Margaret Hensley, is basically her foster mother. She listens to her more than anyone else.”

In truth, he just wanted to use the old man to push Curtis and Adrianá into divorcing sooner.

It wasn’t entirely his fault–he simply couldn’t stand the thought of Adriana staying by Curtis’s side any longer.

The Lincolns were not a family she should ever get involved with,

Curtis might be Harold’s heir, but that family’s business was darker than anything in the Langfords.

The car stopped outside the hotel. Matthew got out first and opened the door for Harold.

Harold stepped out with his cane, face grim.

While Matthew went to press the elevator button, Nicole Jeaned close and whispered, “Mr. Harold, I heard Adriana had a few abortions when she was with Matthew Her body’s already damaged, and she took birth control for years. There’s no way she could get pregnant now. She’s just trying to climb higher and won’t let go of Curtis.”

Harold’s face went black.

A woman without self–respect or shame–he would never let her stay in the Lincolns. “Go to the orphanage and bring the director here. I want her to personally take Adriana for an exam!”

After Harold entered the elevator, Matthew pulled out his phone and called Darren. “Is Adriana with you?”

“How’d you know?” Darren laughed. “You’re not planning to interfere, are you?”

“Tomorrow, I’ll take Mr. Harold and the orphanage director to the hotel to find Adriana. You should drop by and stir up a little misunderstanding,” Matthew said. He wanted Harold to believe Adriana was unfaithful- only then would he be determined to drive her out for good.

“That’s pretty ruthless,” Darren chuckled. “I’m not really that type of guy.”

“I’ll give you an extra ten percent on the East Suburb project,” Matthew offered flatly.

Darren grinned. “Now that’s more like it.”

The next morning, at the hotel, Adriana woke up late–it was already 10:30am.

She’d been unusually sleepy lately.

Still groggy, she opened her Pastalia language app and listened to her lessons while washing up.

The doorbell rang. She thought it was room service. “Who is it?”

“It’s me.” Darren’s voice came from outside.
