“You think you can lie to the Lincolns and get away with it? Even if you’re here, you can’t protect her!” Harold snapped, fury burning in his eyes. He hated being lied to, especially about family and children. In their world, there was never a shortage of women willing to use deceit to climb higher.

“If you’re that angry, why not confront your grandson?” Irene said sharply. “Do you really think this woman could make up such a huge lie and fool Curtis? You’re old enough to know better, so stop pretending you don’t.” She didn’t bother giving him any respect.

“This is a hospital, a public place,” Irene said, folding her arms. “I’m here for an appointment. Why do you think you can order me around? And honestly, I’m curious–what exactly are you planning to do to this woman?” Her singer’s voice carried far, loud enough for people in the hallway to start peeking in.

“Hey, everyone, come see! Let’s all take a look at how a young woman’s being treated here!” She shouted shamelessly.

Harold felt dizzy from anger, his cane trembling in his hand.

“Aunt Irene, I’m your niece,” Nicole said pitifully. “Why are you defending her? Mr. Harold said if she’s not pregnant, she should divorce Curtis and let me marry him.”

“You have status and dignity. Why chase after someone who doesn’t want you? Curtis doesn’t want to marry you. If you keep pushing, you’ll just look cheap. Listen to me–forget about Curtis.”

Irene’s tone softened. “If you like any of those handsome young actors, tell me. I’ll arrange a meeting for you.”

Nicole lowered her head, silent and sulking. She didn’t dare argue–she was scared Irene would tear into her.

But she couldn’t give up. Danielle had given her order that she had to marry Curtis.

She wasn’t the real Nicole, and the only way to keep her rich, comfortable life was to marry Curtis and have his child.

Margaret sighed. “Sweetheart, don’t feel bad. People like us, with no power or family, marrying into wealth isn’t always a blessing.”

She looked at Adriana kindly. “I don’t care if you become rich. I just want you to live safely, leave that little town, and have a peaceful, happy life.”

She felt completely lost. She’d been searching for years for the people who killed her sister and brother–in- law but had found nothing. No leads, no answers. At this point, she was grasping at straws–every time she saw someone who looked like her sister or was around Nicole’s age, she’d secretly arrange for a DNA test.

“Mr. Harold, we don’t need to wait for the results,” Nicole said, trying to sound calm. “Let’s just go. No need to waste time here.”

Harold snorted and got to his feet. “Suit yourself,” he said coldly, glancing at Adriana. “Take care of yourself.”

Adriana had already offended the Lincolns, the Bartons, the Langfords, and the Joneses. She had managed to anger nearly every major family in both Haldoria and Harborton.

Once she divorced Curtis, life wouldn’t be kind to her.
