Chapter 14 How Little My Life Means to Him

When Adriana got back to the apartment, Matthew was ready there, lounging on the couch, waiting.

“Don’t you think you’ve gone too far?” he asked in a low voice, looking around. “You even moved out. Is this how you protest now?”

Adriana stepped up to him, her voice hoarse. “You’re giving that study abroad spot back, right? I told you about it six months ago. You knew how much it meant to me. You promised.”

She crouched down in front of him, staring him straigh in the eyes, her whole body tense.

She’d reminded him over and over, but every single time, he brushed it off like it wasn’t a big deal.

Matthew hesitated. For a split second, guilt flashed across his face, but pride kept him from admitting he was wrong. “It’s just a study abroad program,” he said under his breath.

The truth was, he remembered now. She’d been talking about it for months.

But when Natasha brought up her cousin wanting it yesterday, it completely slipped his mind.

“This matters to me, Matthew,” Adriana said, voice shaking. “I’ve never begged you for anything before. Please… just help me this once.”

He can call me spineless or useless. It doesn’t matter anymore.

I just need this one chance to change my life.

“I’ll take care of you if you can’t go,” Matthew replied flatly. “Whatever you want, I’ll give it to you.” He didn’t want to go back on his promise to Natasha. He’d already made that call.

Adriana stared at him, then stood up suddenly, her voice cracking. “I don’t want that!” she shouted. “I don’t want your pity or your gifts. I’m not some pet you keep around to throw scraps at when you feel guilty!”

Her chest rose and fell as she backed away. “I want this opportunity.”

She’d rather struggle and claw her way forward than live caged and silent for the rest of her life.

But she was just an orphan, born with nothing. She could easily lose everything she’d fought so hard to earn.

That was why she needed this chance. Why she needed him.

“I earned it. I worked for it. My grades put me at the top How could you just hand it over like it was nothing?” Her voice broke with the weight of it all.

She couldn’t go to Curtis because he told her not to go abroad yet.

But all she wanted was this one year. Just this shot at learning from Devan Harrett.

So Matthew was her only option.

And somehow, he’d become the very person to destroy that hope. He took everything from her.

That was why she was angry at him.

“Why would you do this to me, Matthew…” she whispered.

We were together for four years. Doesn’t that mean anything to him?

Adriana had already been dealing with depression, and he blow hit her hard. Her whole body felt numb, her fingers digging into her palms so tightly that blood started to drip.

“Adriana, stop,” Matthew said quickly, his voice rising with panic.

He pulled her into a hug, trying to calm her down. “I’ll talk to Natasha, alright? I’ll tell her cousin to give the spot back. Just breathe. Deep breaths…”

Back when Adriana got out of the hospital, she’d needed six months of therapy. The therapist had warned Matthew again and again not to trigger her.

At first, he was careful and patient.

But over time, Adriana had been so quiet, so obedient, that he forgot about her trauma and the invisible scars she carried.

Adriana clung to his shirt like she was sinking, crying so hard she could barely catch her breath.

“I’ll get it for you,” Matthew said again, trying to soothe her.

Her sobs slowly quieted, though her face stayed pale. She let out a dry, bitter laugh.

He’s going to get it for me?

That spot was mine from the start. He took it from me and gave it away to Natasha’s cousin. And now he wants credit for trying to give it back?

“Matthew … this isn’t just a random thing to me,” Adriana said, her voice low but steady. “It means everything.”

This chance meant everything to her.

And Matthew knew it. He knew Adriana wouldn’t survive getting crushed again.

Natasha will definitely start suspecting something between me and Adriana.

Adriana is easier to deal with. She usually doesn’t put up a fight.

Maybe I can give her something else instead. Maybe buy her something or give her more attention to make up for it. But the way she broke down today made me uneasy.

But she didn’t let him finish. She cut him off on purpose. “Matthew … I’m feeling kinda scared. I just had a bad dream. I saw William hitting me again … You know, during those four years I was in Moweland, I thought about you every single day…
