Ms. Escape. Marrying to Run, Fighting to Rise
Chapter 15 Finally Going to Stand Up for Herself
Adriana sat on the couch, completely out of it. Honestly, I should’ve expected this.
Her hand dropped as she ended the call. She didn’t say a single word to Matthew after that.
It was because she knew that once he made up his mind, there would be no changing it.
He was never going to budge.
If he was willing to throw her under the bus for Natasha once, he’d do it again—as many times as it took, in fact.
Adriana let out a slow breath, her head pounding as she stood up and walked out.
If I can’t count on Matthew, then I’ll just have to do this on my own.
I’m not giving up that easily.
I don’t have anyone in my corner, no powerful connections. But none of that matters. My life might not be worth much to others, but it still belongs to me.
Matthew stood by the tall window at Langford Group’s headquarters, frowning down at his phone after the call cut off. There was a strange feeling building in his chest–a mix of frustration and something he didn’t want to admit was guilt.
He tried calling again. But her phone was off.
Matthew’s jaw tightened. Adriana just doesn’t know what was good for her.
He rubbed at his forehead and sat down, the headache behind his eyes getting worse.
Back then, I wasn’t strong enough to protect Natasha. That was why she ended up marrying William. Now that she’s back, I’m going to make it right.
I owe her. After everything she went through overseas, I have to make up for it somehow. Whatever Natasha wants, I’ll give it to her.
And Adriana… I’ve already done more than enough for her these past four years. I gave her a place to live, paid for her school, and covered her bills. Isn’t that plenty?
I’m even willing to offer her something in return for the spot overseas. Whatever she asks for, I’ll give.
Deep down, he was scared of losing Adriana too. Still, in his mind, she’d never measure up to Natasha. Adriana was simply easier to keep around. She cost less and expected less.
At Haldoria University.
Adriana walked into the office by herself.
“Adriana… The university has already made its decision The spot’s going to Cheryl,” her advisor said cautiously. “Try not to dwell on it. As compensation, were offering you guaranteed admission to grad school
here.” He was clearly trying to smooth things over. Everyone knew Adriana should’ve gotten that spot.
“There were four placements. The university said they’d go by grades, Adriana said, pulling out a printed copy of the rules. “It clearly says top scorers get the first pick. I ranked number one, and I didn’t get any of them?”
The advisor glanced around nervously and gently pulled her aside. He lowered his voice. “Adriana, don’t stir up trouble. There are things you just can’t fight. Decisions like this come from above. There’s nothing we can do.”
“Then I’ll take it public. I’ll post everything online and let people decide what’s fair.” Adriana’s breathing was heavy as she looked toward the hallway. Reporters were already arriving. “I already reached out to the press. I want a proper explanation from the university.”
The advisor’s face froze in shock. He hadn’t expected her to come out swinging like this.
If this story involving favoritism, corruption, and unfair treatment went viral, everyone in the university would be in trouble.
“Adriana, stop this now! Get rid of those reporters!” he said, starting to panic. “Please, just send them away. I’ll speak with the higher–ups.”
Then, Adriana posted her full portfolio online. It wasn’t long before internet users found Cheryl’s submission and exposed her for hiring someone to create the whole thing for her.
The fact that Cheryl had plagiarized and bought her project went viral fast.
Adriana’s work, on the other hand, was clearly top–notch. Nobody could deny how good it was.
That was when the university totally lost control of the arrative. Upper management started to panic. One of the leaders called Cheryl directly and told her to step aside and give Adriana the placement. If she didn’t, things would only get worse.
Furious, Cheryl went running to Natasha.
Natasha hadn’t seen this coming at all. Adriana actually knew how to hit back—and hit hard.
As soon as the trending posts got taken down, Natasha rushed to Langford Group to talk to Matthew.
Natasha walked into Matthew’s office at Langford Group with a worried look. “Anna’s got social media going crazy. Everyone’s blaming Cheryl now. My aunt said… Cheryl’s been crying non–stop. She even said she doesn’t want to live anymore.”
Her voice cracked as she tried to hold back tears. “Matthew, please … Can you talk to Anna? Ask her to give the placement to Cheryl. I’ll pay whatever it takes. I’ll be her if I have to.”
Matthew was stunned. He hadn’t expected Adriana to fight back like this.
“I’ll deal with it,” he said, pulling Natasha into a hug, his eart aching for her. After seeing the news online, he snapped at his assistant, “Get that post deleted–righ now! Block every account sharing it. And bring Adriana here. I want to see her.”
The assistant gave a quick nod and left right away.
Natasha looked over at Matthew. “This opportunity really means everything to Cheryl.”
Matthew nodded. “Don’t worry. I’ll talk to Adriana and convince her to step back.”
