When Daniel heard that Nina might cry for several mor days, he clutched his chest dramatically.
“Amelia, if it really comes to that, let me go as a companion student.”
Amelia replied firmly, “Be rational. Go do your work. I’ll watch you leave.”
Amelia could see how distressed Daniel looked. She genuinely worried he might sneak Nina out later.
While the two adults talked outside, Nina, carried inside by the teacher, cried for a little longer. Then she stopped.
The teacher washed her face. Nina sniffled and choked out a “You’re welcome.”
The teacher couldn’t help laughing, “Nina, when someone helps you wash your face, you should say thank you.”
Nina hiccuped and corrected herself, “I say thank you.”
The teacher smiled warmly. “Nina, just ‘thank you‘ is enough.”
After correcting her, the teacher led Nina to her seat.
“Everyone, time for class.”
The daycare lessons were actually quite fun.
Nina was a little afraid of the teachers, so she did exactly what they told her.
At home, she ignored the same commands completely.
She obeyed the teachers but tuned out the adults at home.
Amelia watched the monitor. She recorded a clip and sent it to Benjamin.
“Look at Nina. She really needs teachers to manage her
Nina attended class smoothly. When it ended, she didn’t cry.
She only cried at drop–off, pickup, and naptime. The rest of the day, she played happily enough.
The daycare had plenty of play equipment.
Nina sat alone on a small swing, gently rocking. From yesterday to today, she hadn’t played much with the other children.
Her mood wasn’t great. She preferred playing by herself
While she was swinging, a boy named Jerry Blaine–wh was even chubbier and taller than she was–walked
over.
Jerry grabbed her arm right away. “My swing!”
He yanked hard. Nina stumbled and fell off the swing onto the ground.

The floor had soft mats. The fall didn’t hurt.
Nina just felt stunned.
She stayed sprawled on the ground. The boy who pulled her down had already climbed onto the swing.
Jerry kicked his legs to start swinging.
He was about to swing right into her, but Sally saw it and hurried over, grabbing the swing ropes to stop it.
“No, Jerry. You can’t do that.”
Sally had witnessed Jerry pulling Nina down.
She gently but firmly lifted Jerry off the swing.
By then, Nina had gotten up.
Sally made the two children stand face–to–face. She explained that Jerry’s behavior was wrong.
She also required Jerry to apologize to Nina.
“Jerry, you need to be a good kid. Good kids don’t bully others. Now you must apologize to Nina.”
Sally’s instruction met resistance from Jerry.
He stood there stubbornly. His chubby face, complete with a triple chin, showed clear defiance.
“My swing.” Jerry accused Nina domineeringly. “She sat ny swing.”
Sally corrected him patiently, “Jerry, this swing and everything here belong to all the children to share. It’s not just yours.”
Sally continued explaining reasonably. Meanwhile, Nina took short steps closer.
Nina’s face looked soft and innocent. She seemed sweet and gentle.
This was only Sally’s second day teaching her. She didn know Nina’s personality yet.
Seeing her approach, Sally soothed her. “Nina, don’t worry. I won’t let you get bullied for nothing. I’ll definitely make Jerry…”
Before Sally could finish saying “apologize,” Nina lifted er chubby hand and slapped Jerry right across the
cheek.
Jerry was sturdy and taller than Nina.
Nina had to stand on tiptoes to hit him.
After one slap, Nina didn’t stop.
She used her little head next and rammed it hard into Jrry.
Nina’s tough little head packed quite a force when she charged.
Jerry toppled over instantly!
