“You love these cookies the most–want to cat this instead?”

Nina shook her head. “No.”

She freed one chubby hand, grabbed the cookies, and tossed them away.

Then both hands tugged at Amelia’s clothes again.

Amelia said firmly, “Nina, no.”

Amelia had been too anxious earlier, desperate to soothe her.

Now that things weren’t so urgent, she naturally wouldn’t indulge Nina anymore. “Mommy, Nina eat.”

Nina tugged at her clothes–the harder she pulled, the closer she came to tears.

She cried with real heartbreak, raising her bandaged arm for Amelia to see.

Her tearful pleading and red little face looked utterly pitiful.

Benjamin, sitting next to Amelia, knew full well what Nina wanted.

He saw Amelia’s expression and knew she was softening.

Nina’s “injury” was fake. But being sick was real.

After driving Benjamin out, Amelia turned seriously to Nina. “Nina, this is the very last time. Once we’re home, no more.

“You’re almost three–you’re a big baby now.

“Big babies don’t do this anymore.

“It’s very embarrassing.”

Amelia insisted firmly that this was definitely the last time.

Nina, face still wet with tears, nodded and agreed sweetly.

But Amelia knew her too well.

She sighed inwardly–Nina would forget the promise very soon–but she still repeated it several times.

Time passed little by little.

Nina finally got what she wanted.

She ate happily, no more crying. Her chubby feet swung with joy.

Once satisfied, Nina’s mood soared.

She leaned close to Amelia’s face, chubby hands patting her cheeks, puckering up for loud kisses.

“Mommy, Nina love you. Nina love you!”

Fully content, Nina clung to Amelia and showered her with declarations of love.

Amelia, sticky with affection, was worried sick.

The family took nearly a full day to get back to Averton.

Upon arrival, Chloe was rushed to the hospital for continued treatment.

Nina got a shot at the hospital and had to take medicine too.

Between shots and medicine, Nina was no longer happy.

Amelia looked, then looked away.

She asked softly, “We… can we be dating now?”

She knew Benjamin liked her, and she liked him.

They liked each other–didn’t that mean they were dating?

Benjamin paused, then nodded.

Hearing they were really dating, Amelia’s eyes couldn’t hide the smile.
