Amelia looked up at that handsome face so close to hers, hearing the straightforward reply. She blinked, her heart pounding.

The heartbeat was too loud.

In that moment, she heard nothing but her own heart and Benjamin’s voice.

She didn’t even hear Nina running back in, hugging her leg.

“Mommy! Mommy! Hug! Nina feet hurt!”

Nina was done shopping and came back. The store owner was a man who looked quite intimidating.

Nina had been a bit scared.

So she didn’t chatter away like usual. She just picked a few toys and asked William to‘ carry her back.

William had set her down at the hospital room door.

The door wasn’t fully closed. William had glimpsed Benjamin holding Amelia’s shoulders. As someone who’d been there, he instantly sensed the atmosphere.

“Can’t we go in?” Daniel, following behind William, hadn’t seen anything.

He frowned. “Nina isn’t wearing shoes.”

William said, “It’s fine. It’s just a few steps–she’s already run in.”

William thoughtfully closed the door.

Inside the room, Nina called “Mommy!” several times before Benjamin picked her up.

Nina didn’t want Benjamin.

“Daddy hurt!”

Nina’s words finally snapped Amelia out of it.

Amelia quickly took Nina into her arms.

“Nina, what did you buy?”

“Toys!”

Nina happily showed off her new toys.

After showing them, she didn’t forget to complain to them.

“So bad! Nina scared.”

Amelia asked, “What was so bad?”

Nina fiddled with a toy, face serious. “That guy so scary. No buy toys.”

Amelia asked, “You’re still scared?”

Amelia smiled–she hadn’t expected Nina to be afraid of strangers.

The family of three didn’t enjoy the warmth long before Amelia told Nina they were going home.

Nina was thrilled to hear it.

“Nina, go home! Mommy, home!”
