“Adriana, are you sure you don’t have any enemies? Youre not holding onto any serious dirt on the Langfords or the Joneses?” Joe asked carefully, testing the waters.
Adriana shook her head.
“It was sodium cyanide … “Joe lowered his voice.
Adriana’s face went pale from shock.
Sodium cyanide–that was the kind of substance used in euthanasia.
Who would go to such extreme lengths just to kill her?
“The police will get to the bottom of this. But you need to be really careful right now. If anything happens, call me right away,” Joe said, making sure she understood how serious it was.
Adriana nodded, still unable to make sense of any of it.
Could Matthew want her dead? That didn’t seem possible.
Then who?
After Joe left, Adriana just sat there in a daze.
Around 2:00 p.m., Matthew showed up with Natasha.
This time, he didn’t bring anyone else. He was probably worried that Adriana might get triggered.
He’d gone to the police station first to bail Natasha out and then brought her straight to the hospital.
“Adriana, Natasha’s here to apologize,” Matthew said as they stood inside the hospital ward.
Natasha looked pale and clearly didn’t want to be there, but she still spoke up. “Adriana, I’m really sorry. Hurting you wasn’t what I meant to do. I never thought Rufus would actually take it that far.”
Her eyes turned red, and her was acting flawless. “I was just overwhelmed with jealousy. I couldn’t handle the idea that in the four years I was gone, you and Matthew…”
She deliberately chose that moment to expose Adriana’s relationship with Matthew.
Matthew visibly panicked. “Natasha …”
take over
Natasha looked at him through her tears. “I’m sorry. I knew about you and Adriana, but I still let jealousy I shouldn’t have come back. I ruined everyting between you two. Matthew, I’ll step aside. I’ll give you to Adriana. I’m sorry.”
…
She turned and started to walk away, crying.
Matthew’s face went pale as he grabbed her arm. “Who id you could leave? You’re my fiancee, and we’re getting married soon! Me and her…”
He glanced at Adriana. He was being forced to make a coice–right here, right now.
“There’s nothing between me and her anymore…” Mathew’s voice was hoarse.

So, they’d come here just to act out some twisted love drama in front of her?
Natasha kept crying and shook her head. “I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. It’s really all my fault…”
“No, it’s not! It’s my fault … ” Matthew pulled her into a tight hug, then looked anxiously at Adriana. “Adriana! You’re not blameless in this either. Just the master slide. Release a statement and clear up the rumors online for Natasha!”
Adriana’s eyes were misty, but she laughed. “I’m at fault oo? Matthew, what did I do wrong? When I got together with you, she was already married. You were single, I was single … Tell me, what exactly did I do wrong?”
Matthew frowned, clearly irritated. “Adriana, shut up.”
Adriana let out a mocking laugh and said nothing more
Natasha looked up at Matthew with teary eyes, clearly trying to manipulate the moment. “Matthew, don’t be so harsh with her. She was with you for four years. She even helped take care of you on my behalf.”
Adriana found it ridiculous. She turned her head away, refusing to look at either of them.
Natasha, eyes still wet with tears, spoke again. “Matthew, if you’re really going to marry me, at least do something to make it up to her.”
Matthew nodded. “Okay.”
Matthew looked at Adriana again and said, “Adriana, Natasha’s a kind person by nature. You really shouldn’t have smeared her reputation online like that.”
Adriana acted like she hadn’t heard him and kept staring out the window.
How had she never noticed before how grating Matthew’s voice was? He was calling Natasha a kind person? What a joke.
“Matthew, Ms. Xander isn’t getting any younger. It’s time she settles down,” Natasha said, her tone full of implication. “I’ll feel better marrying you once I’ve seen her married off too. Otherwise, I’ll always feel guilty toward her.”
Adriana clenched her fists tightly, her breathing turning shaky.
