Chapter 24 The VIP Cover–Up

Matthew was extremely frustrated. Even if Natasha had acted on impulse, there was no way he could just ignore her.

“I got it. I’ll go find her,” Matthew said helplessly, heading out once again to look for Adriana.

If Adriana didn’t cleanly put an end to this situation, the Joneses wouldn’t let her off the hook either.

At Haldoria Hospital, Adriana was lying asleep on a hospital bed.

She was having a nightmare about her childhood.

The door to the hospital ward creaked open, and someone slipped in quietly.

She hadn’t slept a wink all night and only drifted off when morning broke.

In her dream, she saw herself as a child. A couple had come to adopt her. Not long after taking her home, the wife got pregnant. The moment they had their own child, they didn’t want Adriana anymore, so they sent her back to the orphanage.

Adriana hadn’t been abandoned just once.

She’d been abandoned many times.

She was given up by her biological parents at birth. After that, new “parents” would show up every year, wanting to do a paternity test.

Every year, she’d wait with excitement and hope while waiting for the results, waiting for her real parents to come and take her home.

But every time, all she got was disappointment.

By the time she went to college, she’d given up hope of ver being reunited with her birth parents.

Then, she met Matthew.

“Don’t touch me …

”

Adriana muttered, struggling in her sleep.

The person who had slipped in quietly from outside walked up to the bed, pulled a syringe from their pocket, and tried to inject it through the IV port in Adrina’s wrist.

Someone wanted Adriana dead.

“Every debt has a debtor. Don’t blame me for your deat Blame the fact that your existence is blocking someone else from inheriting the family fortune…” the person muttered under their breath, then inserted the needle into the IV line.

Just as they were about to push the plunger, Joe walked with breakfast in hand.

“Hey! What the hell are you doing?!” Joe shouted.

The person panicked and let go of the syringe. Shoving oc aside, they bolted from the ward. The syringe was left behind on the bed.

Adriana jolted awake, breathing heavily. Her eyes followed Joe as he chased after the intruder. What just happened?

Her gaze dropped to the syringe by her side, and a chill ran down her spine.

Joe ran after the attacker but couldn’t catch them. He quickly called the station and reported the incident- someone had tried to kill Adriana.

“Are the Joneses out of their minds? This is attempted murder!” Joe stormed back into the ward, fuming.

It was his day off, and he’d just come to check on Adriana. If he’d come with another officer, there was no way that person would’ve gotten away.

“This is evidence. Don’t touch it. The police will be here any minute.” Joe told Adriana to stay completely still. Then, he sealed off the ward, letting no one in or out.

“Wait here. I’m going to get the surveillance footage from the nurse.” Joe was worried someone might try to erase the footage. He needed to grab it before either the attacker or anyone else involved had a chance to interfere.

Adriana sat frozen in bed, not daring to move.

The Joneses… At most, Rufus would spend a few years in prison. What they needed now was a settlement. If she died, it wouldn’t help them at all. It might even bring them more trouble. The Joneses wouldn’t be that stupid.

Natasha? She probably wouldn’t be that reckless either

Then, who was it? Who wanted her dead? What was in the syringe?

After Joe had handled everything, he managed to get a copy of the surveillance footage. It was clear enough to catch the intruder’s face. He quickly returned to the Hospital ward.

The police had arrived as well. They took statements and went to retrieve the surveillance footage, only to be told that the system had been “damaged“.

Joe’s expression grew darker.

For the surveillance in a VIP wing of the hospital to go down in such a short time… Whoever was behind this clearly had serious power.

“Could it be the Joneses? Rufus did attack Adriana not long ago,” Joe said, voicing his suspicion to a fellow

officer.

The officer turned to Adriana. “Besides the Joneses, do you have any other enemies?”

He collected the syringe. “We’ll take this in for analysis.”

“No… ” Adriana shook her head.

Aside from the Joneses, Mia, and Camelia, she didn’t have any real enemies. And those three were all in the same boat, so there was no way they would be dumb enough to try to kill her. “It probably isn’t the Joneses. If they come after me now, they’ll only be shooting themselves in the foot.”
