The door swung open.
The moment the three older boys saw an adult, they tried to bolt.
Seeing them run, Nina held out her chubby hand to grab one.
“Bad guy!” She wouldn’t let the bad guys get away.
Clara reacted quickly, too. She helped Nina grab one of the older boys.
The other two escaped.

The captured boy, now restrained by Clara, tried to lie his way out. “We were just playing around! You’re hurting me. Don’t pull me like this!”
Clara wasn’t buying it. “They’ve been beaten up. Does this look like playing to you?” She was furious.
Meanwhile, Nina, with a black eye, was wailing into her smartwatch, making calls.
Her grandpa, dad, mom, uncles, aunts, Lucien, Barry, and Nelson-she called them all, one by
one.
She’d dial and burst into tears.
Her crying sent panic through every person on the other end of the line.
Barry was practically begging to get there as fast as possible.
“Daddy, hurry! Nina’s crying! I need to save her!” Barry urged frantically.
Lucien was ready to jump in his own car, but Lucas stopped him in time. “Lucien, you can’t drive that on the road. Come on, take my car.”
Among the adults, William arrived the fastest.
The sight of Nina with a black eye made his heart ache.
“Who did this? Who hurt my child?” he demanded, his face furious as he scooped her up.
Nina sobbed out what had happened. “Bad guy… hit Nina. Nina no win. Hit Nina. Many hit!”
While Nina was crying and tattling, Clara was calling Ryder’s parents.

The phones of those two incredibly busy people were hard to reach.
Clara tried several times before getting through.
As soon as the call connected, Clara urged them to come home.

Clara explained anxiously, “Ryder and Kian have both been hurt by those older boys who came home with Kian. They’re terrible…”
But Ryder’s father, Vance Kane, cut her off quickly, “I have urgent work to finish. I can’t come back right now. How badly are they hurt? Take them to the hospital first. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
He still didn’t want to drop everything and return.
William, overhearing this, took the phone from Clara. “Both your sons have been assaulted, and you, their father, won’t come back to stand up for them? What kind of priorities are those?” he snapped into the phone.
Vance was a notorious workaholic. Ryder’s mother, Iris Kane, was a powerhouse career woman.
William wasn’t against adults pursuing their careers.
