Matthew just stood there in silence, so Adriana went ahead and signed the papers.

Once she signed the resignation form, everything between her and Matthew was officially over.

No more connections, no more ties.

The moment she put down the pen, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted from her chest.

She took a deep breath, rubbed her swollen face, pulled a mask from her pocket, and put it on. Standing up straight, she walked out with her head held high.

We’re all human. No one is born better than anyone else.

She wasn’t less than anyone, just an orphan. That wasn’t her fault.

“Adriana, this isn’t over.” Natasha threatened as Adriana passed by.

Adriana didn’t even pause. She just kept walking.

Fine, bring it on.

In six months, she’d be leaving for Pastalia anyway.

“Adriana!” Matthew called out, panicking as he tried to chase after her.

Natasha’s eyes were red, her voice shaking. “Matthew! If you go after her today … our engagement is off!”

Matthew stopped and turned to look at Natasha.

His chest felt tight with panic.

But after weighing his options, he still chose Natasha.

He was too confident, too sure that Curtis was only interested in Adriana for the moment.

Too sure that once Curtis lost interest, Adriana would come back to him.

He even believed Curtis wouldn’t stay interested in Adriana for long..

When she got to the villa, Adriana stayed in the garden, waiting for her face to look less swollen before stepping into the living room. She didn’t want Eva to worry.

“Mrs. Lincoln, you’re back! Mr. Lincoln… he’s back.” Eva saw Adriana by the window and rushed out, stammering nervously.

Adriana stood up, surprised. Curtis is back? Didn’t he say next Friday?

“Mr. Lincoln changed his schedule. I told him that Ms. Reese came back today … That’s why he changed his schedule. I shouldn’t have said anything …” Eva looked guilty. “He’s mad right now.”

Adriana suddenly felt anxious. Has Curtis changed his mind?

Did Belinda cry and throw a fit, and now he’s having second thoughts?

Panicking, she hurried inside, not sure how to explain things so that Curtis would still keep his promise.

If he backed out now, she’d be in serious trouble.

In the living room, Belinda stood next to the couch, eyes red and puffy from crying. She looked upset.

Curtis sat on the couch, his mood tense and heavy.

Adriana stood nervously where she was, unsure if she should go

closer.

She was afraid of getting caught in Curtis’s anger.

After all, Curtis was technically her boss now.

“M–Mr. Lincoln,” Adriana said nervously.

Curtis glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “Apologize.”

Adriana felt hurt. She knew she depended on Curtis right now, but it still stung that he didn’t even try to understand the situation before taking his first love’s daughter’s side.

“Sorry…”

“Sorry!”

Adriana and Belinda said it at the same time–one reluctantly, the other angrily, like she was being forced.

Both of them froze afterward.
