Chapter 33 We’re Even Now
He didn’t open the door. Instead, he stopped Adriana and agreed not to make her anyone, and even offered her 30 million.
Generous, huh?
But 30 million was just what he’d spend on a single bag for Natasha.
Adriana suddenly thought life was a joke.

When she was 19, she didn’t need 30 million; just a 30–dollar cake and a cheap bouquet could make her so happy she couldn’t sleep all night.
But at 23, 30 million just sounded ridiculous.
“Matthew.” Natasha’s voice came from outside the door, clearly running out of patience.
Matthew had no choice but to open it.
“Matthew …” Natasha forced a stiff smile the moment the door opened, trying to save face in front of the curious employees. “How’s the talk with Anna? Is she willing to give Jimmy a chance?”
Jimmy snorted, still reluctant. “Ms. Jones, with her situation, I’ll need to look into things more. If she wants to marry me, she should get tested for STDs first. Who knows what she’s got?”
“I think Mr. Langford would know best whether I have STDs or not,” Adriana said loudly so everyone could hear. “After all, he’s the only man I’ve ever slept with. And when he talked me into bed, Mr. Langford said he wanted to date me.”
She stared straight at Matthew, demanding an answer.
Back then, when she was still naive, she had quietly asked him after they slept together, “Are we together?” He said yes …
Matthew’s face darkened, and he frowned, warning her to shut up.
“When we were dating, Ms. Jones was still overseas, living with some foreign guy as his wife. So technically, she’s the one who came between us.” Adriana looked at Natasha’s worsening expression and decided to just say it all. “Oh, by the way, your fiancé just offered to ‘keep‘ me for 30 million a year, said I wouldn’t have to get married if I became his mistress.”
“Adriana!” Matthew was furious at her current behavior. She was acting like a woman about to lose it at any moment, nothing like her old well–behaved and considerate self.

But Adriana caught her wrist, and in front of Matthew, she slapped Natasha across the face.
Adriana trusted Curtis’s promise to rebuild the new orphanage.
Her biggest worry was gone. She was just an orphan after all, and she had nothing to fear since she was already at rock bottom.
Everyone in the room froze, staring at her in shock. Natasha looked at her in utter disbelief.
Did she just slap me?
That orphan? That nobody dared to hit me?
Natasha laughed bitterly, holding her cheek as she turned to Matthew.
Matthew looked stunned, too.
He’d known Adriana for four years, and he had never seen her hit anyone. Even when people bullied her, she didn’t fight back.
Back in freshman year, when Mia and Rufus shoved her head into a toilet, she didn’t even resist.
But now… she actually fought back? Who gave her the courage? Curtis?
The more Matthew thought about it, the angrier he got.
He didn’t even understand why he was so mad. It wasn’t just anger, there was something else…
irritation.
He had been with Adriana for four years, and he never made her feel secure enough to do something like that. So how could Curtis make her brave enough to fight back?
And she didn’t just hit anyone, she hit Natasha.
“Oh my god… has Adriana lost it? She always looked so quiet and gentle…

“Yeah, and did you hear what she said? That she and Mr. Langford dated for four years–is that true?”
“Well, Mr. Langford didn’t deny it … so I guess it is.”
“So Ms. Jones was the other woman all along?”

“No, the one who isn’t loved is always the other woman. Even if Adriana dated him, Mr. Langford’s heart was with Ms. Jones.”
The employees whispered among themselves.
