Chapter 40 Street Food with Curtis

Blushing, Adriana grabbed Curtis’s hand and hurriedly pulled him toward the food stalls.
“Mr.–Curtis, didn’t you say we were going to keep our marriage secret?” she asked, finally.
“I said we wouldn’t hold a big press conference about it,” Curtis explained seriously. “I never said we had to hide it.”
Adriana felt her head spinning. But since she’d already signed the contract, she couldn’t back out without paying a penalty.
She’d just have to tough it out and stick with this job.
“That’s the hot dog place!” Adriana pointed happily at a hot dog stall in the distance. “The owner is super nice. Back when I couldn’t afford meals, he still let me help out, even though he didn’t need help.”
Curtis frowned and gave Adriana a deep look. “For those four years… Matthew didn’t give you an allowance?”
Adriana froze for a second, then quickly shook her head. “No, he did.”
But Matthew never gave her cash, only a secondary card that couldn’t withdraw money, only be used for paying with a card.
She hardly ever used it. Most places near campus didn’t take cards.
The places that took cards were too expensive, and Adriana couldn’t bring herself to spend them.
She sent almost all the money she earned from part–time jobs back to the orphanage.
Matthew knew very well that Adriana sometimes went months without spending a single cent from his card.
“Let’s go get a hot dog,” Curtis said, his mood low.
Adriana nodded, feeling the heavy mood, and tried to lighten things up by changing the topic. “Matthew likes the hot dogs here, too. I bought some for him once, and he said they were good!”
That only made Curtis even gloomier.
He just glanced at her, let go of her hand, and walked over to chat with the owner like nothing had happened. “Boss, any seats available?”

“Yes!” the owner wiped his hands on his apron and smiled, pointing to a corner table. “Adriana’s friend, right?”
“Boss!” Adriana said happily, greeting the owner and quickly helping serve food to the other
customers.
“Don’t worry about helping out. You’re here with a friend–go sit down. I’ll make you the best hot dogs,” the owner said with a smile.
Adriana nodded, hurried over, wiped the stool with a tissue for Curtis, then pulled out an alcohol wipe to thoroughly clean the table–worried he might find it unhygienic.
Curtis didn’t care at all; he just sat down and looked at the menu.
He was dressed in a fancy suit, and his watch alone was worth hundreds of thousands …
And now he was sitting on the street eating hot dogs with her. It felt surreal.
“Curtis, do you want some pudding? It’s really good. My treat,” Adriana said, eyes sparkling, pointing at an old lady’s stall nearby.
She usually didn’t splurge on treats like this, only grabbing them when she craved them.
Curtis nodded.
He never seemed to kill her fun.
Adriana happily ran off to get the pudding.
Curtis just watched her, his expression still complicated.
“Two puddings, please.”
You could see that Adriana was naturally cheerful and lively; she’d just been bullied for too long.
If she had grown up in a wealthy family, imagine how radiant she could have been.
“Here’s the pudding. It’s super soft, and the milk is fresh, too,” Adriana said, bringing it back, opening it up, and giving Curtis a little spoon.
Curtis took a bite and nodded.
Actually, he was really picky and never ate sweets.
But today, he did.

Adriana watched him and felt happy just seeing him cat.
Before … she had bought pudding for Matthew too.
But he’d called it junk food, said it was “dirty,” and tossed it in the trash.
