“Take small sips.” Curtis noticed Adriana wasn’t herself and handed her a bottle of water, urging her to drink steadily.

Adriana nodded, but swallowing didn’t ease the pain.

Every twinge in her ear brought back memories of being beaten by Mia and the others four years ago.

It was her personal hell, her nightmare.

“Feeling any better?” Curtis’s voice sounded distant.

Adriana, eyes red, sank into Curtis’s arms and hugged him tightly.

Even though she knew she probably shouldn’t be doing this, right now all she wanted was warmth and safety.

Curtis stiffened for a moment, then pulled her close. “I’m sorry… I came too late.”

Adriana’s ear hurt so much that she couldn’t hear what Curtis was saying. With her left ear effectively deaf, the pressure made her feel almost completely cut off from sound.

The plane finally touched down smoothly; Haldoria was still dark.

It was barely 2 a.m.

“Are you Mr. Lincoln’s girlfriend? Can I add you on social media? I sometimes handle personal shopping; if you need anything, you can reach out.” Yolanda shifted her angle, targeting Adriana as they disembarked.

Adriana didn’t think much and added her social media.

Soon, Yolanda sent a message. “Ms. Xander, I was the flight attendant on your plane earlier. You seemed to have some trouble with your ear. Are you feeling better?”

Adriana, touched by the concern, replied, “Much better, thank you.”

Yolanda wrote back, “Ms. Xander, I meant to ask Mr. Lincoln something during the flight, but forgot to get his contact. Could you pass it along for me?”

Adriana hesitated, then turned to Curtis. “That flight attendant wants to have your contact.”

By now, Adriana understood the truth: Yolanda was interested in Curtis.
