Welcome to Vesper Group, Miss Kensington

Delia’s POV

I needed money and I needed a way back into rooms that had started closing their doors on me.

The headlines had not stopped. Every time Topened my phone, there was another photo of my face, another article calling me the woman who had claimed a marriage that never existed. My father’s house felt like a cage. The few people who still answered my calls spoke carefully around me, like they were afraid my failure might rub off on them.

So when the message came from a man named Adrian Hale requesting a meeting about a private organizational opportunity, I answered.

We met on the forty-second floor of a glass building in Midtown. The office was quiet, all clean lines and expensive silence. Adrian Hale was tall, in his mid-thirties, in a dark suit, and had the kind of smile that never reached his eyes. He slid a black

folder across the table toward me.

“Vesper Group is preparing its public launch in New York,” he said. “We need someone who already knows the city’s elite. Someone who can put the right people in the right rooms without being taught how. Your name still opens doors, Miss Kensington. Even now.”

I opened the folder. The contract was clean. High f*e that had a strict discretion clause. First project listed in bold at the bottom of the page.

Charity Gala – Official Introduction of the Chief Executive Officer of Vesper Group.

“The CEO remains private until the night of the event,” Adrian continued. “No photographs. No interviews beforehand. Guests will only learn the identity when the CEO chooses to step forward. Your job will be to make that night flawless. Invitation list, venue, seating, media control, everything. This meeting is only for the contract. The work begins after you sign.”

I read the numbers again. The payment would keep me comfortable for months. More importantly, it would put me back in front of the same people who had started looking through me.

I picked up the pen.

Adrian watched me sign each page without speaking. When I finished, he collected the folder, checked the signatures, and

nodded once.

“Welcome to Vesper Group, Miss Kensington. There is someone else you need to meet before you leave.”

He stood and opened the door to the adjoining room.

The man who walked in was younger than Adrian. Early thirties at most, he had dark hair. Sharp jaw. Black suit that fit like it had been cut onto his body. He carried no folder, no phone in his hand. He looked at me the way men looked at things they were already measuring.

“Miss Kensington,” Adrian said. “This is Noah Vesper; he is the vice president of Vesper Group. He will be your direct contact for the gala.”

“You spent two years attached to a name that was never legally yours. The city watched you lose it in public. Why should you with ours?”

The question landed clean. I did not look away because he was right.

“Because I know how those rooms work,” I said. “I know who sits where, who pretends not to care about the seating char who will leave early if the wrong person is placed beside them. I know how to keep journalists inside the lines and donors feeling important. My personal story is already public. It does not change the fact that I can still deliver the guest list you w

Noah leaned back in his chair.

“You need this,” he said. It was not a question.

“Yes.”

“Good. Hungry people pay attention.” He tapped one finger once against the table. “The gala is your first assignment. You report to me on every major decision. Venue options. Draft invitation list. Budget breakdown. I want the first package on my desk in five days. If it is weak, we end the contract and you keep the signing f*e as silence money. If it is strong, you continu

“Understood.”

He stood. I stood with him. This time he held out his hand. His grip was firm, dry, and brief.

“One more thing,” he said. “My father will not meet you before the night of the event. He does not do introductions, but I kn you’ve already spoken. He does not do small talk. If you are still here when he finally walks into the room, it will be because th work was clean enough to reach him. Do not disappoint him. Do not disappoint me.”

“I won’t.”

Noah walked to the door and opened it. Adrian was waiting outside. The two men exchanged a short look I could not read.

“Adrian will give you access to the planning files and the temporary office we have set aside for you,” Noah said. “Start today.

He left without another word.

Adrian handed me a second folder and a key card.

“Fourth floor. Corner office. Everything you need is already inside. Welcome again, Miss Kensington.

I took the folder and the card and walked out of the glass building with my name newly attached to a company the city had not even met yet. The contract was signed. The first task was clear. The man who had just measured me in silence was the son of a

CEO no one had seen.

I had work to do.

And for the first time in weeks, I had a door that opened when I pushed it.
