The Son Who Chose

Julian’s POV

I didn’t sleep much.

The house felt different after the school incident. Quieter in the wrong places. Every creak of the floorboards carried more weight than it should have. I spent most of the night in the study with the old

files Grandma Celeste had sent over, going through them again even though I already knew what they contained. Proof of patterns. Proof of patience. Proof that Elliot had been willing to wait years to make

his point.

Just after six, the sky still more grey than blue, Noah appeared in the doorway.

He looked like he hadn’t slept either. Jacket on. Shirt slightly wrinkled. Eyes clear in a way that told me he had already decided something irreversible.

“I’m doing it this morning,” he said.

I set the page I was holding down.

“Doing what?”

“A press conference. I’m going to say everything. The school. The leak on Delia. The fact that he ordered both. I’m releasing what I have and I’m walking away from Vesper Group in public.”

For a moment I just looked at him. The man standing in my study was not the same one who had delivered hollow investment proposals weeks earlier. Something in him had broken cleanly the day before, and whatever was left had chosen a side with both hands.

“You don’t have to burn yourself down to prove which side you’re on,” I said.

“I’m not doing it to prove anything to you.” His voice stayed quiet. “I’m doing it because if I keep quiet, he keeps using my name and my silence as cover. I’m done being cover. He went after a child. He used the woman I’m married to as a public weapon. If I stay silent after that, I’m not neutral. I’m complicit.”

I nodded once.

“Then I’m standing with you.”

He blinked, clearly surprised.

“You don’t have to-”

“I know,” I said. “I’m still doing it.”

We stood there for a few seconds in the early light coming through the study windows. Somewhere upstairs Aiden would be waking up soon. Katia was still on the couch where she had finally dozed off near dawn. Delia had locked herself in the guest room and hadn’t come out since the leak started spreading the night before.

“I’ll make the calls,” Noah said. “Neutral venue. No WEG branding. No Vesper branding. Just a room and

cameras.”

“Do it. I’ll be ready.”

By nine the house was fully awake and tense.

Katia listened to the plan without interrupting. When Noah finished, she simply said, “Be careful what you put on the record. Once it’s out there, it belongs to everyone.” Then she looked at me. “You’re sure about standing next to him?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.” She didn’t smile, but something in her shoulders eased a fraction. “I’ll stay here with Aiden. Delia too, if she wants. Grandma is already on her way over.”

Delia eventually came downstairs looking hollowed out. She had seen every headline. Every clipped voice note. Every old message turned into content. When Noah told her what he planned to do, she laughed once, short and tired.

“So now you burn it all down,” she said. “After the damage is already done.”

“I’m trying to stop more of it,” Noah answered.

She looked at him for a long moment, then at me, then back at him.

“Do what you want. I’m not coming.”

She went back upstairs without another word. I didn’t blame her. Public redemption arcs rarely felt clean when you were the one still bleeding from the last attack.

Noah spent the next hour pulling together what he could safely release: internal messages that showed the chain of instructions, payment records tying the man at the school to a shell account, timestamps that made the sequence impossible to dismiss as coincidence. It wasn’t a complete case, but it was enough to force questions no one could easily bury.

I watched him work and thought about how strange it was to see someone willingly set fire to the only structure they had ever been taught to protect. Most people in our world spent their lives reinforcing the walls. Noah was walking outside and lighting the match himself.

The venue was deliberately plain. A downtown conference room with beige walls, too-bright lights, and a single long table facing rows of chairs that filled faster than expected. By the time we arrived, the place was already packed with reporters, cameras, and phones held high. The air smelled like coffee and anticipation.

Noah and I walked in together. The moment we appeared, the noise rose. Questions started before we even reached the table. I didn’t answer any of them. I simply took the chair slightly behind and to his right, close enough that the cameras would catch the fact that I was there on purpose. Not as a spokesman. As a witness. As a statement.

Noah sat down, adjusted the microphone, and waited. He let the noise peak and then fall. When he finally spoke, his voice was steady in a way that only comes after someone has already accepted the cost.

“My name is Noah Vesper,” he said. “Until this morning I held senior positions inside Vesper Group and carried my father’s name without question. As of this moment, both of those things end.”

The room went still in that unnatural way crowds do when they realize the story is bigger than they

expected.

“Yesterday my father ordered an attempt to approach a six-year-old child at his school. That child is Aiden Windsor. The intention was intimidation. On the same day, private material belonging to Delia Kensington was released to the press. The material was selected and timed to cause maximum public damage. Both actions were intentional. Both were carried out with the expectation that I would remain
