Chapter 4
Two years ago, Joy took a break from training.
During that time, I led a group of warriors into Blood Moon Forest for advanced drills using the border maps she helped create.
The forest’s dense mist dulled our sense of smell.
We had no choice but to follow her map step by step to find the campsite.
But she had forgotten to mark the dangerous zones.
I fell straight into a hunter’s trap.
The mechanism triggered instantly. A silver bullet tore through me.
The other warriors were dragged into danger as well.
In the thick of it, I sent mind link after mind link to Asher.
And every single reply was the same. “Fine.”
For seventy two straight hours, that repeated response crushed nearly every bit of hope left
inside me.
In the final moments, a fierce will to live surged through me.
Liz and I fought our way out of the trap together, then pulled the other trapped warriors free.
We pushed forward on nothing but our last scraps of strength until we finally found a Dark
Witch’s lair.
I traded away my family’s Moon Necklace for healing potions.
Once my phone had enough charge, I immediately called Asher.
But Joy answered instead. “Why the hell are you calling? He’s asleep!”
I called back. My number had already been blocked.
My heart felt like it had fallen into a frozen moonlit abyss.
And it was at that exact moment the dark witch told me the truth.

Asher had once hired her to place a Silence Curse deep within our bond.
No matter what I said, his answer never changed. “Fine.”
It felt like none of my words ever truly reached him.
Both Liz and I fell silent at the same time.
News of the attack on me and the warriors eventually reached Blood Moon territory.
Asher only sent an elite warrior squad to escort us home.
Everyone was arranged into the pack hospital for treatment under the best healers.
But Asher himself never came to see me even once. Joy had kept him busy.
The silver poison had ravaged my right hand. It destroyed my ability to fight.
I gritted my teeth through rehabilitation until I could barely lift a crossbow again.
But I could never shoot properly anymore.
After that, I asked Asher to break our mate bond.
I nearly burned the entire pack house down.
His body was covered in claw marks from me.
“Why would you curse me?” I screamed at him.
“Do you have any idea how much more your ‘Fine’ hurt than silence ever could?”
“Asher, do you hate the sound of my voice that much?”
He waited in silence for every wound to heal.
Then he answered, in that same flat, emotionless voice.
“I just didn’t want to reply.”
“You talk too much. It’s always things like ‘nice weather today’ or ‘this kitten’s so cute.’ I’m not
interested in any of that.”
My love for him completely withered in that moment.

We slept under the same roof every day, yet our hearts drifted farther and farther apart.
I finally admitted to myself that I couldn’t spend the rest of my life living like that with him.
And yet, for the stability of the pack and for the lingering hope still buried inside me, I gave him chance after chance.
I regretted it. Deeply.
Two years ago, I should have cut ties with him completely.
Joy stood on stage, blushing as she asked her first question.
“If you could go back in time, would you choose a different relationship?”
