Chapter 127

Why does every bad guy have to give such a long, boring-ass speech? I do my best to look horrified while Beta Ken prattles on and on about how he’s going to take over Cam’s territory. At one point, he starts laughing to himself, and that’s when the old man approaches me again with a curious expression.
“I believe I can cure your werewolf cancer,” he says in a hushed tone that leaves me stumbling backward in surprise because isn’t he a bad guy?
“Now, I know what you are thinking: why would you help me? You see, well, I’m not really a bad guy; I am only a scientist, and the vampires have all the good stuff needed for experiments and science: magic, libraries hidden under the ground, and oh! They also have Julius’s blood…”
“Blood from Julius? Why is that useful to you?” I whisper back while Beta Ken’s back isn’t faced with us.
“Well, you see,” the scientist smiles. “He is a pureblooded vampire, so his blood, combined with my science, could probably heal you from your disease, Luna Elmyra. But if you want the blood, then you will have to play your cards right and pretend I’m one of the bad guys. If we are smart about this, it could be a win for both of us. You’ll get rid of your werewolf cancer, and I will finally be able to take over this lab once your mate swoops in to save the day by murdering the vampires.”
“Hey, what’re you two talking about?” Beta Ken snarls, and the scientist steps back immediately.
“I was just telling her how interesting it would be to give her blood from your mate. Julius’ blood mixed with my herbs could possibly heal her. It would be quite something to see.”
I school my face, trying to keep the excitement from seeping in and taking over my emotions. Werewolf cancer curable? That’s the stuff of which fairy tales are made. But I am not going to let my guard down a single second. I can’t let Ken think that I trust the old man or that he is an ally.
Instead, I cry dramatically to withdraw suspicion, “No, please! I don’t want to be experimented on!” I do, actually. If it means I will live.
Ken laughs cruelly. “Oh, you won’t have a choice, little Luna. You’re our prisoner now, and we will do whatever we want with you.”
He turns to the scientist. “A cure for werewolf cancer, huh? The plan was to kill her, but having a cure might come in handy when bartering with other werewolf packs. I’ll ask Julius about this.”
My heart is racing as I realize this could be my chance. If they keep me alive to experiment on, I might have the opportunity to try and escape or get rescued. And if the scientist really wants to help me, then I might get to grow old with Cam!
I force myself to appear terrified. “Please, don’t do this. Just let me go!”
Ken sneers. “Not a chance. You’re far too valuable now.
He turns to leave, presumably to call his vampire mate. The scientist gives me a slight nod before following Ken out of the cell.
Once I’m alone, I let out a shaking breath. My mind’s spooked, between all that has taken place: the betrayal, kidnapping, and now this probable cure dangling before my face. Still, I’m not to hope too much for the time being. For the time being, I need to think about staying alive and searching for a means of getting away from here.
I close my eyes, reaching out through the mate bond to Cam. *Please,* I think desperately. *Please find me.*
As if in answer, I feel a surge of worry and then determination through the bond. Cam knows something is wrong. He’ll be looking for me.

I wake up to the sound of voices outside my cell. My body aches from sleeping on the cold, hard floor. I’m still naked, which makes me feel even more vulnérable

Chapter 127
“Are you sure about this, Julius?” I hear Ken’s voice. “Using your blood for experiments?”
“If it means we can cure werewolf cancer, then yes,” a smooth cultured voice replies. This must be Draco Julius, the vampire. “Think of the leverage we’d have over other packs. We could demand anything in exchange for the cure.”
My heart pounds, and I wonder if they will really go through with this. Part of me is terrified it means being a guinea pig, but then another part latches onto that hope this will cure me after all.
I hear the door creak, and I move to sit up quickly, tucking my bare legs under what little blanket remains.
Julius leads the way in. He is tall and impossibly handsome, with aristocratic features and piercing blue eyes. Ken and the scientist follow after him.
“Well, well,” Julius says, his gaze raking over me. “So this is Camden’s little mate. I can see why he’s so taken with you.”
I glare at him, refusing to show him fear. “What do you want?”
He smirks. “Feisty. I like that.” He turns to the scientist. “Begin the experiments immediately. I want daily reports on her progress.”
