Chapter 125

Eli

“You need to let me fight Lautner in your stead,” Clara tells me while I’m drinking greedily from my water bottle. Training is over, and we are standing in the shade, away from all the other pack members gathered here.

“I’m also willing to be your champion,” Evie helpfully tells me in a low voice, so Lautner and her friends won’t hear her. “I know that I’m not the strongest, but you have cancer, Eli. You aren’t strong enough to face Lautner.”

“I know that,” I’m not even going to bother to lie. Lautner might be the strongest she-wolf in the pack. “But Evie, you aren’t strong enough to beat her either,” my eyes flit over to the ones belonging to Clara. “And no offense, but I don’t think you’re stronger than Lautner either.”

“No offense taken,” a sad smile spreads over Clara’s lips while her sister sighs.

“Okay, if none of us are fighting her, then at least announce your illness to the pack. Tell them that you’re sick -if they know that you’re dying, they will think Lautner is an asshole for challenging you at this time.”

I furrow my eyebrows. “No, I don’t think that’s how it works. I’ve always been an outsider. No one likes me, including my own mother. If I announce that my stepbrother is my mate, people would want Lautner to murder

me.”

“No, they won’t. You’re not blood-related to your stepbrother. Sure, your parents married each other when you were young, but childhood friends that end up together grow up side-by-side as well. Also, you’re forgetting that every single pack member also has a human side-they will be sorry for you once you tell them about the cancer. Who knows? Maybe some of them even gang up on Lautner and tell her to stop pushing so hard for Luna.”

“Wouldn’t that be the dream?” I snort, wishing that could happen so I could just quietly enjoy whatever time I had left cuddling and having sex with Cam.

Cam…

I wonder how his meeting with the pack elders is going?

Even though this isn’t the time to be daydreaming about my mate, I can’t stop thinking about him. It hasn’t been even a full day without Cam, but my heart is already aching for the touch of my mate. His kisses, his hugs…little fireworks of joy light up simply remembering this morning.

Cam is such a strong and mean-looking Alpha, but if I kiss his chest or stroke his skin, he turns into a purring kitten. The gentle giant truly cares for me and it hurts knowing we won’t ever get our happy ending with pups running around the house. I will be dead before then.

“Oh, Beta Ken is on the move!” Evie whisper-yells, shooting me a pointed look. “Ask him to let you make an announcement and tell everyone about your condition!”

I sink my teeth into my bottom lip, heart racing as I consider doing just that. Letting everyone know I’m dying and that Cam is my mate might actually work if I don’t want to fight Lautner because my friends are right-no one would think Lautner was doing the right thing challenging a dying girl. The only issue I have with this plan. is that my mother is here. She is wearing her training outfit while talking animatedly to a few other middle- aged wolves. Their training session is about to start in ten minutes or so.

Clara follows my gaze. “Doesn’t she know that you and Cam are mated?”

“She must know,” I tell Clara without looking away from my laughing mother. “I’m carrying his scent, but hearing me confirm it is bound to shock her, especially since he marked me already.”

“You think she is going to care?” Evie asks.

I almost laugh out loud. “Oh, she is going to be furious. Cam is the golden child even though she didn’t give birth to him, and hearing that I, the black sheep of the family, is about to become Luna will grate on her nerves.”

“Maybe that’s all the more reason to announce it,” Clara says with a mischievous glint in her eye. “Shock your mom and put Lautner in her place at the same time.”

Chapter 125

I study my mother, considering it. Part of me wants to avoid the drama, but another part is tired of hiding and being pushed around. Before I can decide, Beta Ken reaches us.

“Uhh… Eli,” he says, his tone and expression telling me he is shocked about something. “Alpha Cam called me… He umm… He wants you to see the pack doctor and asked me to take you there? Anyway… Are you ready to go?”

It’s obvious Beta Ken doesn’t know why I need the pack doctor. He is scratching the back of his neck, making his bicep bulge in response. Evie stares at it with longing eyes-she is too hungry for pretty men for her own good and I resist the urge to roll my eyes to speak up instead.

“Y-yeah, I just…can I make an announcement first?”

A look of amusement moves over Beta Ken’s face. He isn’t used to the bashful Elmyra. Every pack member knows me as the problematic daughter of the Alpha family, not as the vulnerable girl hiding behind the wall of my no-filter attitude.

“Sure,” he says, stilling before adding, “Want me to get everyone’s attention for you?”

“Please.”

Beta Ken offers me a curious smile before he puts two fingers inside his mouth to whistle. Everyone turns their heads, and that’s when he raises his voice: “Everyone, listen up! Eli has an announcement to make.”

The chatter dies down as all eyes turn towards me. I can feel my heart pounding in my chest, but I have to make this speech. Evie and Clara give me encouraging nods.

“I, um… I have two things I need to tell you all,” I begin, my voice shaky at first but growing stronger. “First, as many of you have probably noticed, Cam and I are now mated. I’m carrying his mark.”

Murmurs ripple through the crowd. I see shock on some faces and disgust on others. My mother’s expression is one of pure horror. Lautner looks like she’s about to explode with rage.

I press on before I lose my nerve. “And second… I have-” I struggle to announce my disease. My mother is glaring at me from across the grass, and I gulp before forcing out my last sentence, “I have werewolf cancer. I’ m dying.”
