Megan’s lips quivered. “Ivy… Ivy’s gone.”
Katherine went rigid. Every muscle in her body locked up. She stared at Megan, wide-eyed. “What do you mean?” Katherine could barely hear her own voice.
Megan’s hands shook. “Katherine, I’m so sorry. Ivy’s missing. You were out cold for more than a day. Ivy’s been missing the whole time…
Katherine felt like she was floating outside her body. Megan’s words sounded far away. “Ivy’s been missing for more than a day?”
Megan saw the shock written all over Katherines face. She knew she could not hide it any longer.
“Lucas and Marsh have people searching already. The security cameras never caught Ivy leaving. So everyone thinks she must still be in the hospital. But there’s been no sign of her.
“Ivy disappeared the night you had the accident Rachel visited her right before she vanished. We don’t know if Rachel had anything to do with it, but Lucas found out Ivy left her hospital room on her own.”
“Rachel went to see Ivy?”
Megan nodded.
Katherine’s jaw tightened. Her mind churned with panic.
Rachel went to see Ivy.
Katherine pressed her palms against her forehead. She forced herself to breathe and focus on that fact.
Rachel must have had a reason for showing up then.
What could it be?
Katherine replayed everything. She’d been in a car crash, rushed to the hospital, and then played dead to escape, with the doctor’s help.

If it was not just an accident, if Rachel was behind it, then Rachel’s first move would be to check if she survived.
When Rachel heard she was supposedly dead. he probably celebrated. Rachel hated her and Ivy. Even if Katherine died, Rachel would still get Ivy.
So Rachel went to Ivy just to tell her Katherine was dead. She wanted to make Ivy suffer.
“Did they search the entire hospital?”
“They did. There’s nothing.”
A surge of desperation hit Katherine. She threw off the blanket, yanked the IV from her hand, and tried to stand.
Megan reached out to stop her, but Katherine pushed past her.
Katherine staggered along the wall, barely holding herself up. Her body felt like it might fall apart, but she would not stop. She was sure Ivy was still somewhere in the hospital.
If Ivy never left, where could she have gone?
Katherine stepped into the elevator. When she reached the lobby, she suddenly stopped. Her eyes fixed on the basement button.
That was where the hospital morgue was.
Megan ran after her and caught up. “Katherine That’s the morgue. Why are you going down
there?”
Katherine looked at her. “No one checked the morgue, did they?”
Megan blinked. She realized no one had bothered looking there because it sounded impossible. “I don’t think so.
Katherine did not hesitate. She pressed the basement button.
Megan always pretended to be brave, but she really was not. The thought of the morgue made her skin crawl.
She wanted to run, but her legs kept following Katherine.
The elevator doors slid open. Katherine glance at Megan. “If you’re scared, you can wait upstairs.”

Megan shook her head and grabbed Katherine arm. No. I’m coming with you. It’s better if we stick together.”
Katherine nodded and led the way out. She moved slowly, not from fear but because every step pulled at her wounds. It hurt, but she would not stop.
A few steps later, a staff member blocked their path. He looked at them with suspicion. “Do you know where you are? You can’t just walk in here. You both need to leave.”
Katherine stood her ground. “My child might be here. Please let me look.”
“What do you mean, your child might be here: The staff member stared at her hospital gown and pale face. He clearly thought she was not in her right mind.
Ive been here the whole time. I haven’t seen any child.”
Katherine’s head jerked up. She suddenly thought she heard Ivy call out. “Mommy”
It was like the air changed in the room.
Katherine pressed forward, not stopping. The staff member moved to block her again. “I told you, there’s no child here. You need to go. You can’t just walk in.”
“I hear my child calling me.”
Katherine would not stop.
The staff member glanced at Megan, who looked lost and scared. Megan had heard nothing.
Katherine shoved past the staff member. She was certain Ivy was inside. She ignored everyone and yanked open the nearest door.
The staff member’s patience snapped. “What’s wrong with you? I told you, there’s no child here. You need to leave.”
Megan tried to reason with her. “Katherine, this place is watched every day. Ivy would never come down here. There are only bodies here. Let’s go back.”
