Megan held tightly to Katherine’s arm. The morgue felt so cold that it cut right through her. making her knees weak.

Katherine turned to her. “You really didn’t hear Ivy? I know I heard her calling me.”

Megan stared at Katherine, totally lost. She hadn’t heard anything. But seeing that look in Katherine’s eyes made her skin crawl.

“Katherine, are you sure you are not just… Megan trailed off, not wanting to finish.

Katherine spoke over her. “You need to listen. Iy’s calling for me. She is calling for her

mom.*

They both went silent. The morgue was so still it felt like the world had stopped moving.

Katherine shoved past the staff member and darted inside before he could react.

“Hey, you can’t- The staff member tried to black her, but Megan threw her arms around him and held on tight.

“Katherine, keep looking. I will handle him.”

Megan hadn’t heard a thing either. She wasn’t sure Ivy was really inside. But she knew Katherine wouldn’t leave without searching, so he stood her ground.

The staff member tried to shake her off. Megan clung to him with both arms, pleading. “Please, just let her check. She’s at her breaking point. If she doesn’t find her daughter, she’ll lose it

Katherine’s jaw was tight. She flung open every door she passed. The cleaning room. The autopsy room. Then, finally, the cold storage.

The staff member started yelling for backup, his voice echoing down the hallway.

Katherine was beyond control. She had the look of someone who would tear the place apart. Nothing could stop her.

Katherine’s eyes stayed sharp. She kept mumbling. Ivy’s calling me. I hear her. Ivy…”

Suddenly, a scream ripped through the morgue The sound was so sharp it felt like it cut the

air.

For a second, Megan’s ears went numb. She let go of the man and ran inside, panic taking

over.

She saw the rows of cold storage drawers. And beside one of them, a small body curled up tight. Ivy’s skin was ghostly pale. She was so still she didn’t seem to be breathing.

Megan’s eyes went wide. Her legs gave out. She anded hard on the floor.

Ivy was really there.

Katherine rushed over and dropped to her knees by Ivy’s side. She scooped Ivy up, her hands shaking uncontrollably.

She touched Ivy’s frozen face. Terror hit her in waves. Ivy had been gone for more than a day. All that time, she had been alone in the morgue.

The cold in the storage room was brutal, worse than anywhere else in the hospital. Katherine could not understand how Ivy had survived.

Her voice broke as she called out, “Ivy, Ivy, Mommy is here. Please, Ivy, open your eyes. Please, Ivy, look at me.”

Katherine kept calling, but Ivy did not move an inch.

Ivy’s skin was ice cold. Katherine felt her heart ink. She loosened her hold just enough to press her trembling fingers to Ivy’s nose, afraid of what she would find.

Her mind raced with every nightmare she could imagine. For a moment, she could not breathe. Then, suddenly, she felt the faintest breath on her fingertips.

Katherine gasped, relief crashing over her. She cooped Ivy into her arms, got up, and raced out of the morgue.

The staff at the entrance stood frozen in stunned silence.

They realized just how bad things had gotten.

No one ever came in unless a body arrived, and now they had found a child.

No one knew when Ivy had slipped in.

No one understood how she had managed it.

No one could say if she was alive or not.

Word had already spread. The whole hospital was searching for Ivy. She was not just any child-her father was someone powerful, even the hospital director would not cross him.

This was a disaster.
