Lucas’s hand was still gripping her arm. All she could hear was the water rushing loudly. Looking at the redness that refused to fade, a strange surge of anger kept rising in his chest.

After rinsing it for a while, Katherine felt the pain ease. She pulled her arm back slightly. “I’m

fine now.”

Lucas turned off the faucet and looked at her. “Are you stupid? That water was boiling. You used your hand to block it?”

Katherine looked at his dark expression, unable to understand why he was so angry. It wasn’t like he’d been burned.

She shook her hand lightly and muttered, “It’s not like it hurt you. Why are you so worked up?”

“What did you say?”

Katherine lifted her head and met his sharp gaze. “I said I knew the water was hot. A kid’s skin is delicate. If she’d been burned, it would’ve been way worse than this. I saw it, so of course I couldn’t let her get hurt.”

The explanation made sense. Anyone with basic decency would’ve tried to stop it.

Lucas narrowed his eyes, staring at the woman in front of him, his mind flashing back to Ivy’s cry of “Mommy.”

That word could’ve been a child instinctively calling for her mother in danger. Or it could’ve been a slip, the truth bursting out in panic.

If it was the latter, then Katherine was Ivy’s mother. Ivy showing up at the auction house, drawing on his car, then appearing at the hotel as a suspected hacker-suddenly, all of it made sense.

Lucas pressed his lips together, his gaze tightening on her. He watched her in silence, but inside his thoughts were in turmoil.

If Ivy really is Katherine’s child… then she is my child too.

But it was all still speculation. Without proof, Lucas didn’t dare let himself hope.

The most direct way to confirm it would be a DNA test.

Katherine’s lashes fluttered slightly as she looked into Lucas’s dark, unfathomable eyes. There was a haze in them, making it impossible to tell what he was thinking.

“Lucas, is Katherine okay?” Rachel’s worried voice sounded from outside.

To Katherine, that voice now sounded fake and infuriating.

She’d seen it clearly earlier. Rachel hadn’t accidentally bumped into the kettle while grabbing something. Her movement had been deliberate aimed straight at Ivy.

Katherine clenched her hand at her side, opened the door, and walked out, fixing her gaze on Rachel.

Rachel looked at her timidly, eyes brimming with tears and apology. “I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. I knocked over the kettle by accident. Katherine, are you okay? Do you need to go to the hospital?”

“Accident?”

Katherine’s clear eyes rested calmly on Rachel.

Rachel dodged her gaze twice, then looked toward Lucas as he stepped out, her lashes trembling. “Lucas, I really didn’t mean to…”

She lowered her head, looking on the verge of tears.

Lucas hadn’t seen exactly what happened. All he’d seen was Katherine rushing forward without hesitation to protect Ivy.

Now he narrowed his eyes at Rachel.

Katherine stepped closer and grabbed Rachel’s hand. “Rachel, was it really an accident? What a coincidence that you just happened to hit the kettle, and it just happened to spill toward a child. That water had just boiled. Did you even think about what would’ve happened if it splashed on her?”

Rachel knew exactly what would’ve happened.

That was why she did it.

She’d wanted to hurt Ivy out of spite for her helping Katherine earlier. She’d wanted that child to suffer.

She’d been vicious enough to target a child.

Fury burned in Katherine’s eyes.
